Kirpianuscus A comedy. and, in strange manner, a beautiful lesson about choices, appearences and decisions. about America, love and the need to be yourself. a fairy tale, off course. but who has the gift to propose a smart perspective about reality. and gives humor, a splendid work of Eddie Murphy and James Earl Jones and the spirit of clash between different perspectives about life in a not formal style.
slightlymad22 Continuing my plan to watch every Eddie Murphy movie in order, I come to Coming To America (1988) Plot In A Paragraph: An extremely pampered African Prince (Murphy) travels to Queens, New York, and goes undercover to find a wife whom he can respect for her intelligence and mind.Despite Murphy picking director John Landis (Trading Places) himself, they did not get on during filming, Landis said Murphy had turned in to an egotistical monster, with a ridiculous list of demands. He vowed never to work with Murphy again. "The guy on Trading Places was young and full of energy and curious and funny and fresh and great. The guy on Coming To America was the biggest pig of the world" Murphy also slated Landis in public saying his career was hanging by a thread, when he "threw him a bone" and hired him to direct this movie. He added he wished he had left him and his career where it was, instead of gifting him a hit movie. It is impossible to dislike this charming movie!! This film marks the first time Eddie Murphy played multiple characters in the same film. I loved that the homeless men that receive the money from Prince Akeem are the Duke brothers from Trading Places. All the supporting cast are great, in fact there is not a weak link in the cast. Definitely one to revisit every now and again. One of Murphy's best. It seemed liked audiences could not get enough of Eddie Murphy as they again turned out in droves as Coming To America grossed $128 million at the domestic box office (only Rain Man and Who Framed RogerbRabbit grossed more) to finish 1987 the 3rd highest grossing movie of the year.
creta-79965 I rate this 11/10 ... why?It is flawless... the storyline is a joke in itself yet so likable! The movie has many fall of your sofa with laughter scenes in it... this is better than many of the highly rated comedies on IMDb... trust me this an excellent movie... well directed... well scripted... well executed...Eddie Murphy is in his prime for this movie... top class acting along with Arsenio Hall whose facial expressions in the movie are perfect for the scenes he is in.This is my favourite Eddie Murphy movie of all time... As a kid I watched this over 20 times... total classic!
Joe Raven Very intelligent way to write a silly movie. Laughing all the way through. The quotable lines in this film are never ending. The James Earl Jones character was spot on. No one else could've pulled it off. Murphy is so versatile. He must've played 10 parts in this film. The storyline was interesting and the buildup was just the proper length. The scenery was beautiful even if cgi. The chemistry between murphy and hall is evident through the entirety of the film. The chemistry between murphy and his love interest is also evident even though I don't believe they ever worked together. For a comedy, there are twists, turns, and drama that kept me interested the whole movie. This is a must see!
