braddugg Thankfully, the year began on a promising note for the Hindi Film Industry. Thanks to Dedh Ishqiya for that. This is a film that you will like to watch with your boyfriend or girlfriend (whichever is applicable) or spouse. Coz, there are some moments which will linger in head, long after you have seen this film. They may spice up some moments in your romance. This film has subtitles. Thanks to the language used which is more Urdu than Hindi. I believe that since "Umrao Jaan" this is the first good attempt. The film works for the acting. Naseeruddin Shah is effortless. Arshad Warsi is the hyperactive Babban whose wit is hilarious and the spontaneity stupendous. Also they are ably supported by Huma Qureshi and Vijay Raaz and host of others. But above all others I give in to Madhuri Dixit as Begum Para. I love Madhuri Dixit and her dance. Thankfully, she dances and just those 5 minutes of her moves are divine. She has a divine grace in dancing and is surely one of the best dancers for screen. Thanks Madhuri for dancing superbly after a hiatus. The camera work is superb and even the editing is good. At least there is no nonsense. Dialogues by Vishal Bharadwaj and his team are exemplary. In fact the best I have heard in a Bollywood film in long time. Direction till the climax was wonderful and it fell flat in the climax scene. Apart from that, I have no big qualms from this. I am going with 3/5 for a good movie. It may not work for everyone but love and desire have always worked for me.
sesht De dhishqiya. Or, Dedh Ishqiya.Watched it a while back, and posting a very late review. Small cinema in a little (thankfully clean) vegetarian multiplex. Small screen - oh, I mentioned that already? Now, why is the sequel to a popular (not completely Indie, not completely commercial) flick playing in 1 show/day on 1 minuscule multiplex screen on the first day of its first week? Oh well, small mercy that it actually released here. What rocked? The chemistry between the leads, the (land that time forgot kinda) milieu, the music, the poetry, the technical aspects, the performances, the banter, (some of the) comedic writing (sleepover standoff, mobile phones esp.), (most of) the background and foreground score, and all of the language used. There are just not many movies being made in this milieu, and that's a disappointment. I could watch Huma Qureshi in anything, and Vijay Raaz is as menacing as he is hilarious. Madhuri always overdoes it, and is no different here; however, she thinks that overacting is acting, and most of her audience seem to agree, so who am I to complain? Naseer does well, as always, but is hampered by a puzzling lack of characterization. Warsi, as always, in this series along with the Munnabhai ones, stands out, and is perhaps one of the best reasons to watch this on the big screen. What sucks? The fact that this sequel doesn't take off from the kick-ass final scene of Ishqiya, (most of the) comedic interludes, the meandering plot, the holes in said plot, the over-confidence of the director, the characterization (or lack thereof) of the new characters, how not to end a joke and keep repeating it, the lack of a(ny) element of surprise, the absence of one of the main leads from the 1st movie without any explanation whatsoever, and the fantastic noir-ish tone of the original. Still puzzling over why that approach was left behind, along with the lead. All in all, definitely better than most of the commercial crap shitting in cinemas. Do give it a chance when you have some time. DVD's the only way to go now.
binducherungath Dedh Ishqiya (डेढ़ इश्किया ) is definitely a movie with actors, Urdu dialogues, editing, cinematography, sets, costumes of class. Madhuri Dixit looks gorgeous and radiant as widowed Begum Para Jaan and one can't take eyes off her when she is on screen. Huma Qureshi as Muniya stands at par with her effortless performance. Combination of small time thieves Khalujan alias Ifthekhar (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban alias Razzaakh Hussain (Arshad Warsi) is great with their banter, blame-games and all. They con a jewellery store owner and flee with an expensive necklace. Ifthekhar walks into the swayamwar of Begum. His pretense as poetry-spouting nawab to woo Begum is played with ease. Babban is full of energy and very natural in his attempt to woo Muniya. Unrelenting Jaan Mohammad is exemplarily played by Vijay Raaz. His efforts to learn Shero-Shayari and to understand the 'Matla' raises laughter. Manoj Pahwa as the poet in captivity and Salman Shahid as an eccentric gang-lord do complete justice to their roles. Shooting has been done at Mahmudabad Palace near Barabanki. Dialogues are sharp. Urdu sounds so good. It is a complete visual treat to watch Madhuri dance to Pandit Birju Maharaj's choreography. Music is more of classical based and different. Poetries are fabulous. The plot has been developed with great intensity. Storytelling has been done with great finesse.Dedh Ishqiya is definitely more enthralling than Ishqiya. It is a must watch for people who enjoyed Ishqiya.
Sandeep Gupta Much like Munna (Sanjay Dutt) and Circuit (Arshad Warsi) are integral part of Munnabhai series, Khalu (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi) are the integral part of our own Desi crime comedy series Ishqiya. Ishqiya wasn't a crowd pleaser so its sequel Dedh Isqiya also does not aim the masses. Instead with its Urdu dialogs every now and then to support its atmosphere and honest story telling, it requires your patience and attention so that you can enjoy the quirky and intelligent dialogs written by Vishal Bhardwaj. The movie is most enjoyable whenever you witness the electric chemistry between our leads. New actors include another veteran Madhuri Dixit, fierce beauty Huma Qureshi and ultimate performer Vijay Raaj. Vijay Raaz's character must be kept in the story if they are taking the series forward which they should. Movie looses you sometimes during its long Urdu conversations and the tiring and labored performance by Madhuri Dixit. Intelligent crime comedies and black humor are still to find a place in Bollywood hall of fame but Vishal Bhardwaj and his team promises you that they will not compromise and keep serving you with intelligent stories.
