MovieInspector This film was, at the time of its release, the most expensive film. I can totally understand why. It is all completely lavish and the sets are wonderful. The acting is the best part though. Shahrukh Khan excels in the role of Devdas, a role I think only him and perhaps Aamir Khan could do well. His performance is totally out of this world. For me, Aishwariya Rai ruins the film a bit; her acting is ordinary, if that, and she just doesn't do much to add to the overall effect; the other two steal the show. Madhuri, on the other hand, is absolutely fantastic. The music of the film is one of a kind, with the stand out tracks, for me, being 'Maar Daala' and 'Dola re Dola'. Technically, everything is superb; can't fault the screenplay, cinematography and editing. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has got it right once again. Hats off to him.Verdict: one of the finest films you'll see. I give it 9/10
long-ford This version of the famous literary novel Devdas is extremely opulent, so much so that caste and class differences suddenly make little sense when both families are so incredibly wealthy. Apart from this misstep, and some overacting in the first half-hour, the film is definitely worth watching. All three leads Shahrukh, Aishwarya and Madhuri are in top form. Kirron Kher is good though she tends to overact. There are some dazzling musical numbers including "Dola Re" which is a tremendous show-stopper. The film is essentially a tragedy and Bhansali brings this point home (MINOR SPOILERS) in the heart-breaking climax. Recommended.Overall 8/10
melly47-1 This has to be one of the most romantic films ever, ever made! It definitely deserves 10 stars.I love the storyline. Its about the lovers Devdas and Paro. Devdas is from a wealthy status family in India and Paro is of a poor family. Devdas and Paro live next to each other as children, and therefore become childhood sweethearts. Then, Devdas is sent away to school, and they are both separated. Ten years later Devdas comes back. Obviously, they fall in love. Because of their difference in fortune Devdas's father forbids them to be together, so Devdas goes away and tries to forget about Paro. But Devdas realises he can't live without Paro and returns only for him to find Paro is about to have an arranged marriage to an older man. So once again Devdas and Paro are separated, but this time for good. Devdas becomes an alcoholic as he tries desperately to recover from losing Paro through his own fault. Eventually, Devdas becomes seriously ill, and is told he will soon die. As he's moments from death, he remembers the promise he made to Paro (to go to her doorstep when he dies), and sets out to fulfil it. He makes it to his destination, but unfortunately Paro does not know he is there. When she finally finds out, she runs to Devdas to be with him, but doesn't make it in time. Its so tragic!! The acting is amazing from all the cast. Especially Shahrukh Khan (Devdas) and Aishwarya Rai's (Paro) performance, its no wonder they won so many awards! Maduri Dixit (Chandramuki) was also very good. The music is wonderful. Its one of the best things about the film in my opinion. All the costumes were beautiful in this film! I really loved Chandramuki's outfit during the song "maar dala".10/10! Excellent film!
shivakumarvishwa I saw this movie in January this year and i have to say this is a breathtaking movie. This is sometimes Sanjay Leela Bhansalis best work. And i do consider. The story opens when Devdas family is happy that there son is returning from England. His mother says that she will be the first person to see him.But he goes to see Paro first.Mother is angry. Then a fight happens between Paro mother and Devdas mother. She banned him from seeing her.He meets Chandramukhi. From her Husband Chunilal he is Drunk. The movie is a remake of the 1955 Devdas starring Dilip Kumar as Devdas,Succhitra Sen as Paro,Vyjayanthimala as Chandramukhi.Shahrukh,Aishwarya,Madhuri and Jackie were superb in the movie.Shahrukh delivers a Breathtaking performance. The cinematography and Chereography is Excellent. The music is Excellent with Excellent picturisatioons. This deserves an Oscar Award. To Bad it failed.I don't know why they ignore Indian movies.Costumes are dazzling.Dialogs are wonderful. The climax is powerful. The scence where she runs to the gate is unforgettable and haunting.Kirron Kher and Smita Jaykar do a great job and so do the others. On the whole, this is an amazing movie
