paulclaassen It was nice to see Lance Henriksen here, as I have the world of respect for him. He is well cast as The Host. Unfortunately most of the younger stars are not very convincing in their roles, with the exception maybe being Christopher Jacot. They just don't act the way people would under the circumstances. As for Katheryn Winnick, my goodness, what's with that screeching voice? Sorry to say this, my darling, but you'll never be a scream queen! The dialogue is incredibly insensitive and very plain, actually. A lot is not understood until the twist ending. The film is not scary. It wasn't exciting. It wasn't anything really...not until things turn clearer towards the end. It was an ok entry in the series, but what happened to the iconic Hellraiser chains?? Pinhead also only makes guest appearances.
vengeance20 So after the dull & boring Hellrasier: Deader film, you'd think that the next film would be worse, well... it wasn't! It was actually a good step up from the previous installment & quite frankly, comes 3rd to Hellseeker! The film is about a group of teens who go to a Hellrasier themed party. (Yes, this film just like that of the Scream Films, it gained it's own cult following within the film, with merchandise, a website, outfits you name it!). So anyway they gain entry into this party via a Hellraiser themed game website & each of them get invited to a house party in the sticks which is Hellraiser themed also! They then get taken to a room & are given masks & Mobile Phones to contact each party goer for a drink/sex/partying! The host then drugs each of them & once again, after opening the Lament Configuration get lost into another world because of this host!I found the film to be very good & even better than that of Bloodline, which is also great in it's own way too. But this film had a more modern take on it, which even now makes it look old considering how far technology has come but that's another talk. Anyway the film was not only modern looking from the previous films, but had a theme laced into it, it was a Hellraiser theme in the film too, unlike the others where it wasn't as well known, the Lament Configuration became well known within the Hellraiser universe & thereby became a cult. Just like that of the Scream Films also, they had a Scream Theme within there world just like that of the Hellraiser Franchise with this 8th Film. The gore effects were plain epic in this film not to mention the kills & death sequences which also made it great! The ending I also liked & found it to be a great way to wrap up the ending to this great film! Katheryn Winnick was drop dead gorgeous in this film! Absolutely babe!Overall this was a really great breath of fresh air & a great surprise as Deader left a bad taste in my mouth! 8.5/10
suite92 The picture begins in the Roman Catholic setting: nuns, so-so sculpture, churches, services for the dead, dreary music, and stained glass windows. Coincident and discordant with that, we have young adults (well, children in adult bodies) who look all correct in their level of solemnity, which they will soon enough chuck off as just another aspect of their hypocrisy. These are the folk headed for the grinder. The protagonist group (Chelsea, Mike, Allison, Derrick, Jake, Adam) were all addicted to the MMORPG video game 'Hellworld,' and have come to the funeral of Adam. Adam apparently committed suicide after a period of instability. Jake is a bit stand-offish at the funeral because he thought the other four spent too much time at the game while Adam was in trouble. If the titles are to be believed, two years go by. The sub-group (Chelsea, Mike, Allison, Derrick) get tickets to the 5th annual secret Hellworld party at a large semi-secluded mansion. They meet Jake there, somewhat to their surprise.Since they are first time party attendees, The Host shows them around his collection of Hellworld memorabilia. All of them are quite impressed. The building is called Leviathan House, and supposedly was designed by Phillip Lemarchand. The house was originally a nunnery until 80 nuns went missing. Then it became a house for the criminally insane, and developed a history of paranormal violence. The staff took a bit of a wrong turn when they all took local anesthetics and proceeded to dismember each other.Chelsea shows open skepticism to The Host. He shows her a powerful hallucination in which he introduces himself as Pinhead. All this is shrugged off, and they go to the party for getting drunk with masks on.After that, we get down to divide and conquer. The protagonists have some rather bad experiences, and the elimination derby is on.Allison walks into a room marked 'Keep out.' She should have done that. Chelsea thinks she sees Adam, and pursues. Jake goes exploring too, and meets Pinhead. Then he notices that no one acknowledges him, except someone who has been dead for years. Derrick goes looking for love, but needs his inhaler. He just cannot get to it on the dance floor, and has to search hard to find it. Mike finds a young woman who gives him some physical attention. Chelsea calls him, but he cannot be bothered. Then his hallucinations start.Chelsea stays a bit aloof, and resists the goings-on the best. Will she survive the party?-----Scores----- Cinematography: 5/10 A lot of VHS quality, which is disappointing. Then again, this picture was straight-to-video.Sound: 4/10 Music by Lars Anderson was not effective.Acting: 3/10 Lance Henriksen seemed a touch not involved, but still delivered his lines professionally. Doug Bradley was good, as usual, in his short role. The other actors just sucked rocks. This definitely includes Henry Cavill, who later played Superman in Man of Steel (2013).Screenplay: 4/10 There is some very terrible dialog, followed by more. "Like a bad horror movie, isn't it?" The Host asked Chelsea. Motivations were often unclear. The story seemed merely an elimination derby for twenty somethings with a Hellraiser setting. The double reverse at the end was moderately interesting, and was the basic reason for 2/5 instead of 1/5.
wes-connors A group of attractive young adults like to play "Hellworld". But, first, we see them attending the funeral of player Stelian Urian (as Adam). He apparently suffered a game-related suicide. This is later cleared up - okay, that's debatable - in a flashback. Leading woman of the group is Katheryn Winnick (as Chelsea). Even without drugs, she has a vivid, nightmarish imagination. Although Ms. Winnick doesn't undress like others in the cast, she is still ultra-sexy. Leading man is boyish-looking Christopher Jacot (as Jake). He has been estranged from the gamers, since the death of their mutual friend...The other significant friends are stud-like Henry Cavill (as Mike), horny Khary Payton (as Derrick) and playful Anna Tolputt (as Allison). Doug Bradley (as Pinhead) is around, too, of course...Two years later, the group goes to a party hosted by Lance Henriksen; there, all hell breaks loose. This could have been a very good horror film, but there are some problems. Most obvious is the tacking on of at least two dumb "twist" endings; the one with the coffins was fine, but it is diluted with each additional turn of events. Also, there is a feeling you've missed something in the "Hellraiser" series. Don't look for the previous movie dealing with the story referenced within; it doesn't exist. Some of this is obviously rushed, but the photography, setting, and some parts of the story work well.***** Hellraiser: Hellworld (9/6/05) Rick Bota ~ Katheryn Winnick, Christopher Jacot, Lance Henriksen, Henry Cavill
