Synopsis

Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.

Charles Reichenthal Ewan McGregor has one or two effective scenes in this film, but the film nevertheless is awful with Carrey giving perhaps his worst performance. The film doesn't know what it wants to be - even though it is allegedly based on a true story of a con man de luxe and his love affair. The opening scenes seem to indicate a move towards satire/farce and a typical Carrey characterization. But here he goes far far too far, and his acting stint is painful. The film then swerves back and forth from slapstick to melodrama and back to slapstick. It doesn't work at all. Both actors play gay characters - Carrey camps it all the way to high amperage while McGregor plays it simply and is able to get both laughs and sympathy. Was this film ever rally released??? If so, why??
Charlotte8171 One word: AMAZING. A tear jerking film that was totally worth watching, I saw it once but wasn't watching it seriously so I had to watch it again (cried both times though!). I thought it was weird at first seeing Jim Carrey play a gay man with Ewan McGregor but you come to realise that the film is just about pure love, persistence, and connection between two people. This is the first film I've seen where it actually made sense and worked SO WELL it kind of surprised me how into it I got. I could genuinely understand their relationship in a very weird but wonderful way. The intelligence and wit of Jim's very complex but pure at heart character is truly something to behold, conning his way through jobs in amazingly crafty ways along with the very soft, quiet, and lovable character Ewan plays is crafted in a way that I can't put into words; it just worked so well. Although the two characters are polar opposites, they work so harmoniously together. If you want a film that isn't just your 'stereotypical hot gay gays' film and is funny, sad, and exciting then it is perfect; a must watch, I wish the film went on longer. Amazing as well to realise that this was actually based on real life. Perfect film.
LeeMcBride Probably the worst, if not THE worst movie I have ever seen. Granted, I actually rented the DVD as an after thought since I usually like both of the headline actors, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Man, did I ever get broadsided (yeah, right) by this one. Anyway, in hindsight, I realize now that I would have been better off renting "Waterworld" again. Even if I was gay, I think this film would make me feel exploited and embarrassed by its lack of coherent direction and plot. The potential for something much more interesting and relevant was there but sadly shallow in in its character development and conclusion. Even though I knew this movie was not going to be some compelling and seminal piece of work, I still wanted something better than an hour-and-a-half night light. No wonder this was such a box office bomb - I think "Plan B From Outer Space" had a better gross.
dariansdad I don't think I would have appreciated it or enjoyed nearly as much then as now. Maybe because of the other genre films or maybe my shifting attitudes toward cinema. Doesn't matter.Jim put on the performance of a lifetime in this. I know that many people do not appreciate his style (or as they say, lack thereof). I judge an actor on the material and how well they melt into it. Sometimes there is a technique to the character/actor that is enthralling. Other times it's the writing or the direction and even more rarely, the production. This script was not the strongest but Jim and Ewan made it way better than it deserved to be. Both men are phenomenal actors with craft and experience to take a mediocre platform and soar from it.Kudos to Glenn Ficarra and John Requa for being able to reign in Jim just enough to keep the material from becoming total confetti while at the same time bringing the actors to the paramount.I enjoyed the viewing and I look forward to seeing it again in ten years or so.
