Predrag This early 90's effort is arguably Rodney Dangerfield's last truly great comedy. He's in top form in this one as an engaged working class guy who agrees to coach the "Ladybugs" girls soccer team to finagle a promotion from his boss & better support his future wife (Ilene Graff). Soon, he discovers how deep over his head he's in, the team is a disaster. That is, until he convinces his teenage future son--who has natural skill as a player, to don drag as new member "Martha" & whip the team into shape. So it sort of functions as a "Tootsie" on a soccer field as both must keep up the charade in order to have a winning season & impress the boss with his coaching. Jackee Harry gives fine comic support as Rodney's sassy assistant, and even the late child actor Jonathan Brandis has some very good moments. The funny part of this movie is not the story line because it not the best story of all time like an "Avatar" but it's the hilarious side jokes here and there that lets you know why Rodney is so funny. His timing on jokes are flawless, the way he gets out of trouble here and there during the movie is priceless. Even the comments that he had against other soccer coaches during the film. One scene the ladybugs were losing very bad during the game and the assistant coach said "we still got a chance" and Rodney said "Some chance, like a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest." Now see you gotta laugh at something like that because the movie is full of little side jokes like it you don't see that type of comedy today and if you do you at least know where its origins started from.Overall rating: 7 out of 10.
Tss5078 We all have our own guilty pleasure, most of them we never admit to, however I will admit one now. I have loved this movie ever since I was a kid. Now that I've watched it as an adult, I can admit that it is one terrible movie, but it still had me laughing as hard as I did when I was 10 years old. In Ladybugs, Rodney Dangerfield plays a salesman who is asked to coach his company sponsored, girls soccer team, but he had no idea what he was in for. The other coaches are ruthless, the parents are insane, and worst of all his team is terrible, so what is a comedian to do? He gets his girlfriends, athletic, 14 year old son to dress up as a girl and join the team. The son is played by teen heartthrob Jonathan Brandis, who I became a huge fan of during the show Seaquest DSV. Brandis was absolutely hysterical as the teenage son, playing a teenage daughter. Some of his lines, along with his interactions with Dangerfield are pure comic genius. As for Dangerfield, while he was a legendary stand-up comedian, he was a terrible actor. The next logical step for a great stand-up comic is acting, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and while Dangerfield has some pretty funny lines, he is one of the worst acting comedians I have ever seen. The story here is a unique and interesting one, in a context that is most definitely not meant for younger kids. There are some funny lines and more laughs to be had at the ridiculousness of the situation, but besides that, this is not a great movie. I gave it an even rating, but when it comes to this film, I am biased by my admiration for the late Jonathan Brandis and my fondness for this film I have loved, since my childhood.
MartinHafer This dreary comedy is just not funny. Think about it--you know you are in trouble when the plot involves having a boy dress like a girl to play soccer AND the supporting actress is Jackée Harry. Plus, the movie is just very poorly written with most of its jokes being crude and stupid. You also know you are in trouble when one of these painfully unfunny moments is when Rodney is in the dressing room with this young boy and is helping him dress up like a girl--and the dialog is written as if he's having sex with this child. Wow--child molester humor--now that's sure to create a lot of laughs,...if you're an idiot or a child molester. It's really a shame, as Dangerfield did some cute movies that were FUN. While EASY MONEY and BACK TO SCHOOL weren't terribly deep, they were good for a few laughs. This film didn't even provide one.
scoby27 i love the film it is very funny i have it on tape and watch it all the time. i just about know it word for word and it is funny so i don't know why it only got 41/2 stars. especially Jonathan Brandis he is so cute you people are crazy to only give him a few stars. sure the other actors and actresses are funny too but Jonathan is the best. Rodney Dangerfield is very funny to he makes you laugh.especially when he throws the football in a scene at Jonathan and breaks the vase.Jonathan is just watching some girls dancing in their underwear and he tells him not to strain his eyes and other places that was funny. thats why it deserves 10 stars
