Synopsis

Claire, a brilliant student, seeks answers to the meaning of life in the calm of her biology laboratory. One day, she meets a mysterious young man, Jack, at the cinema, and is intrigued by his style, assurance and audacity. Apart from his artistic activities, Jack has a regular scam going, ripping off foreign businessmen with his loyal mate Charlie and two actresses. But his tough guy exterior conceals a secret passion for old books, and he dreams of writing a novel one day. Jack falls hard for Claire's purity and curiosity. An unusual romance develops between them. But Jack is scared of their growing intimacy and rejects Claire, withdrawing into his shell. Abandoned and confused, Claire gradually begins to neglect her studies and embarks on a spiraling course of self-destruction, whilst Jack, who tries to ignore her, concentrates on his criminal activities. However, a sharp detective, named Linda Fox, is following his dodgy tracks.

Reviews

peggiemiller1209 Each film is about a different story. This film is about one situation between a NYC rough guy, but, not physical and a girl who attends the University in NYC. The acting by Adrien Brody is Excellent. The female lead is very good as well. Great chemistry. The direction is very good and the film is creative going from the first time they begin seeing each other to the time when Brody realizes he's in love and has a break down in a restaurant bar. It's a lower budget film, but, should show you don't need a big budget to make an excellent film. If everyone would just look at each movie as different and make no comparisons they should realize "Love the Hard Way" is excellent and well worth watching. It is rated R and has some nudity (not much). Delicate acting by Brody is well noted. Should have been viewed by more people who love all types of films. You may think that could not happen in real life, but, it does and probably more than most think. End
countersparks I am in awe of this movie, excuse me while I wipe away my tears. Adriene Brody and Charlotte Ayanna are brilliant as a couple of unlikely lovers. My favorite part about watching Brody perform is his ability to BE his character. I put my Summer of Sam Oxygen preconceived notions of the young actor and instead existed with Jack. I highly recommend this movie to everyone, but especially to aspiring actors/filmmakers like myself. The way this film is directed, acted, edited and written is so brilliant and so inspiring. I went into my next directing bit with a new outlook and won an award for the one act I did. Peter Sehr is a brilliant man and whoever was casting director is brilliant as well. I continue to enjoy everything Brody does and can't wait to follow his career for years to come.
daniel-j-doughty I watched the film to it's semi-awful end and I have to say that it just wasn't worth it. I liked the initial characters. I enjoyed the flirtation of the bad boy and the good girl. I even enjoyed the initial back and forth of I love you-Who are you again-I love you. But when we got to the Claire is a bloody whore part of the film I just fell a bit a apart. Not to mention there are glaring holes in the logic of the film. Just because two guys are friends doesn't mean they'll get assigned to the same kitchen in prison. I mean with persuasion and some chance it might happen, but what happened to their dumbass third guy who pimped Claire out the first time? OK, and here is my finally bit of criticism. I, unlike others, have no problem seeing a good student fall from the pedestal. I personally would have expected drugs to be a part of the fall, but no matter the cause I'm not stunned to watch such a fall. I am however, AMAZED, to watch her be a serious scientist 2 years later. And in fact, to be screwing guys without condoms in NYC for several months before her beau was bagged? All I can say is AIDS AIDS AIDS. When they fast-forwarded two years forward I expected him to show up at her funeral plot, not to meet the successful scientist doing well without him.Decent acting. Decent plot. BIG PLOT HOLES.
juicyru22 I first saw Love the Hard Way on cable and absolutely loved it, probably because it kinda resembled my relationship with my ex boyfriend. I did not do anything that Claire did, but my ex, was very much like Jack, with sleeping with other girls and lying, but yet was in love with me. My ex did change over time like Jack did, but he only did it by my threatening to leave him. If Claire would have threatened to leave him, I think it would have affected him but not as much as other people. I never changed myself to make my ex love me because I thought there was something wrong with me. Claire did that but only because every one of Jack's friends told her she doesn't belong in that life. After watching the DVD features, which I suggest any fan of this film to do, the ending that I had hoped for... the walk didn't end at the lab... was true. There is a deleted scene of them visiting Charlie in jail, and also there's a commentary on the making of the movie. It's very useful and it makes people who know that Jack changed for Claire and had hope for the two to be together, learn that they ended up together. There was too much of a bond to let that go between them. I praise the director/writer for his work on this movie.
