cmovies-99674 PROS: If I look at this movie from only a technical stand point there was a few things that had great potential. To start of, the action scenes were shot and directed very well. The suspense in each scene was well realized and well thought out. The benefit from this was a movie that was engaging, no matter how many times one looked away. To add on, the actors in this film were rather good. Screaming is easy, but real pain is different. The actors really pulled off their role. Another part that was helpful was a detailed set. The set and place were well materialized. You were put in a place that you've never scene before, and at the end of the movie you practically knew the house like the back of your hand.CONS: The sheer amount of worthless violence in this movie was sickening. The movie had a strong enough plot in it to do away with all the torture. It didn't help the watcher nor did it become an actualized part of the movie. After the amount of torture and violence in the film there was practically no where to go. The director dead locked himself in a way that the ending was insignificant and poorly designed. He fell into a cliché that was not needed or wanted, but there was no other way for the movie to become substantial. And to top it all off, the goals that each character had was forgotten as the film progressed due to torture being the driving force of the movie. www.chorror.com
Tina Willis This thriller broke outta the gate sprinting... Firstly a baby's kidnapped, a security guard stabbed, a couple dealing with an unknown as of yet, emotional disaster while entertaining friends at their new home, a car full of agitated brothers (one shot) running home to mommy aaaaand to top it off, a tornado lurking on the horizon....And that's before the movie even hit the 5 minute mark. This quickly turns into a home invasion film and it is cleverly initiated. The cinematoghrapy, camera use/lighting/editing,settings and costumes were all done, appropriately, realistically and on a professional level. The make-up/special effects were a tiny bit dated, but this type of movie depended little on the need for them. The stunts and fight scenes were performed and shot nicely and realistically.Although their were numerous characters, each and every one acted their character very well and believably, human flaws and all. DeMornay tho, stood out(Mother)and was exceptionally good.As stated, the pace was rapid and the plot interesting, with twists and turns introduced intermittently and at the end. Some reviewers have stated that there was torture shown just for tortures sake. I disagree. When there was torture done, it was to advance the story and add intensity and it was never ever gory or over the top. In fact it was very tastefully done but in a manner that added credibility and tension to the characters.I quite liked this movie, and being made over 7 years ago now, found it pretty tame compared to todays standards. Which is a plus for me. I like thrillers and horror, but don't care for the excessive shock gore.Id recommend this movie.
callanvass Three imbeciles are running from the law after a bank robbery and head to the house where they used to live that is now occupied by Beth and Daniel Sohapi. A party comes to a sickening halt when the bank robbers crash the party and threaten everybody's lives when Mother demands to know where the hidden money is, giving out a few harsh lessons in the process. This is a nominal remake of the original. Considering I didn't care for the original, my expectations were minimal for this one. I ended up being pleasantly surprised with this suspenseful and brutal thriller. This one isn't just about vulgarity and shock value like Troma's Mother's Day, this one has many interesting subplots at play, ranging from the loss of a child, adultery, betrayal, fabrication, among other things. It is a much more well-rounded script and let me just say that it will hit you with all the tension and violence. We get a pool ball smashed on someone's hand a few times, nasty wounds from the result of a face bashing. We also get vicious stabbings, but the worst might just be a face that is blown off with a shotgun. The acting is very good. Everyone is flawed in some fashion and far better looking than the Troma version, since it is very modernized and not set in the woods. Rebecca De Mornay is chilling as Mother. What I loved about her character the most was the clever ambiguity. She's a polarizing figure that alternates between sweet and sadistic. It always kept me on my toes. Rebecca is no stranger to crazy roles. Jaime King is excellent as our heroine. Her vulnerability was just perfect and she was easy to root for. Frank Grillo is a bit of a scumbag, but he played his part well. Shawn Ashmore does the nice guy routine very well. Briana Evigan doesn't have as much to do, but she's solid. There is an "Are you kidding me" moment at around 85 minutes in, but the thing that knocked me on my ass the most was the ending. It was downright cruel, but extremely effectiveFinal Thoughts: This one has a mean streak like no other. You'll wince a few times, even if you're a huge horror fan like I am. I personally thought it was a solid movie and much better than the Troma version. Speaking of the Troma version, I'm gonna have to revisit that one. It's been quite a while7.6/10
MattyGibbs This is yet another home invasion movie but one with a bit of a difference. Allied to the usual psychopathic housebreakers is the added ingredient of their mother. I didn't really buy into the set up as it's pretty far fetched however that's not really the point of these movies so it didn't spoil it for me. Rebecca De Mornay is manic and slightly over the top as the ruthless mother of the psycho's. The rest of the cast put in surprisingly convincing performances. The film takes plenty of twists and increasingly brutal and at times unrealistic turns but nevertheless always remains horribly watchable. You do almost at times question why you are entertained by the horrific happenings. The film is very brutal and there are quite a few unpleasant scenes so if you don't like these kind of films you won't like it. For horror fans though this is a well made and very watchable film which is as unpredictable as you could wish for.
