SnoopyStyle John Farley (Seann William Scott) is a successful self-help writer going back to his Nebraska hometown to get a local award Corn Cob Key. He tells his callous agent Maggie (Amy Poehler) that the book is about letting go of past trauma like his dead father. However the title comes from his gym coach Jasper Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton) bullying him. He is shocked when his mother Beverly Farley (Susan Sarandon) reveals that she's dating Woodcock. He falls for former classmate and English teacher Tracy Detweiller (Melissa Sagemiller). With Nedderman (Ethan Suplee) and his brother, the group of Woodcock victims haplessly try to break up the relationship.Billy Bob Thornton is fine as the cruel Woodcock. Susan Sarandon is playing it too dumb. She doesn't play dumb well. The character has to be less simplistic or they should have gotten somebody different to play the mom. Seann William Scott is simply not funny in this movie. His natural personality is being suppressed. This could still work as a black comedy if it took more chances and be darker.
namashi_1 'Mr. Woodcock' is a Fun to watch for a one-time viewing. It gets some of the jokes right & a talented cast pitch in admirable performances. 'Mr. Woodcock' Synopsis: Taken aback by his mother's wedding announcement, a young man returns home in an effort to stop her from marrying his old high school gym teacher, a man who made high school hell for generations of students.'Mr. Woodcock' has a breezy first-hour, where most of the sequences make you laugh. The second-hour becomes monotonous, but a fairly done climax gets back your attention. The Screenplay moves from funny to becoming repetitive. Its passable nevertheless. Craig Gillespie's Direction is fair. Cinematography, Editing & Art Design, is average.Performance-Wise: Seann William Scott delivers a comedic performance, yet again. Billy Bob Thornton enacts the moron with spice. Susan Sarandon is sincere enough. Ethan Suplee is cute. Amy Poehler is first-rate.On the whole, 'Mr. Woodcock' works well enough.
Collin Malloy Mr. Woodcock (I roll my eyes every time I say the immature name) is the story about a successful author coming to his hometown to accept an award. When he gets there, however, he finds his mother is dating his former abusive gym coach. Yes this is just a dumb comedy with sex and dick jokes, but why I hate it so much is because of the character of Mr. Woodcock. He is a terrible person who abuses children (hilarious right). It's not even just how he abuses children, it's the that he gets away with it through the whole movie. He abuses children and picks his former student for no reason. He is a one-dimensional jerk with no redeeming factor. The mother is also a hateful character who we're suppose to feel bad for even though she plainly doesn't care she's dating a man abused her son. The movie would have been better if maybe they made Mr. Woodcock a generally hated person who was himself abused and the mother the only person who comes to like him and the student and Mr. woodcock eventually bond over their neglectful fathers. But no, the is much more disappointing (I won't spoil it for anyone). Now, I like Billy Bob Thornton. One of my favorite comedies is Bad Santa. Yes Billy Bobs characters of these two movies are jerks, but here's the difference. While Mr. Woodcock is just a jerk for no reason, the titular Bad Santa is also a pathetic alcoholic, who is constantly berated by his friend and eventually becomes somewhat a better person. If you enjoy this movie that's cool, it doesn't mean you're a bad person. I just personally hate it. If you like mean-spirited low-brow comedies then this is the movie for you, otherwise stay away.
bazmitch23 This is one of these films that so hateful and so unlikable, I wish it were never made. Poor John Farley gets abused by not just Mr Woodcock, but every character under the sun. You can't help but feel sorry for him. Also, whilst all this is going on, you'd be asking yourself "I'm sorry, this is supposed to be a comedy. Where are the jokes?"Well, the comedy is Ethan Suplee who plays Farley's only friend and he's an idiot. That's it. There's your comedy.Mr Woodcock is supposed to be a jerk with a heart of gold, but the movie doesn't show the heart of gold. Maybe if he saved John's life at the end, or explained why he's a bit mean, it might've worked. But it's hard to appreciate Mr Woodcock when he's mean to Farley in very scene they're in.And the end of the film, does he and Farley get along? No. In fact he's even more mean to him. Also, Amy Poehler plays the same character in every film she does. In here she's no better.Billy Bob and Sean Scott have nothing nice to say about this film. I don't blame them. They're probably angry at this film as much as I am.Overall, I HATE THIS FILM. I hate the characters (with the exception of Farley, it's nice to see Sean not play Stifler for once, he's the only good thing about this film), I hate the story, I hate the ending, I HATE IT!I'm getting angry just writing this.
