Alficus Edwards I do love myself a good horror movie. So when I was at the second hand DVD store and saw what claimed to be a crusader themed horror movie, I thought that it was definitely worth splashing 50p on.Boy, was I wrong. Or was I? This film was long, confusing, and very, very low budget. The box claims that it is only 85 minutes long, however IMDb says that it is a whopping 101 minutes long. I didn't take the opportunity to time it, so I don't know if my copy is abridged or not.Either way, calling this a good movie, even a decent movie, is an exaggeration, and to see an actor that played Daryl in the walking dead reduced to this, well it stung a little. The first two halves of this movie were quite confusing. A string of weird, confusing characters that didn't say much. Weird props that never seemed to lead anywhere or be used, and overall it had a bizarre mood. The constant flashbacks to crusader times were overly long and quite confusingly used.It wasn't until the final third of the movie, that these props and characters do anything, and you go 'ohh, thats what that is'. Not much makes sense until the very end. If you can stand the confusing boredom of the first half, the payoff is just about worth it. Someone I was watching it with did walk off during this section however, so it is rather a testing movie to watch. One of the most strange things however, was the direction choices that had nothing to do with the budget. At the very end, as the 'baddie' is about to be killed, the high tension moment is interrupted with very strangely forced in comedy lines and quips, then straight back to seriousness. It was a very odd and unexpected change of pace that left me giggling with confusion and surprise during the tense ending. Will I watch this movie often? No. Will I watch it ever again? Maybe? Give it ago for 50p, but there is a good chance that you will not enjoy this movie.
marvelgirl17402 *** This review contains spoilers *** I was a little skeptical when I began watching the film but boy did I change my mind quickly! Paul Sampson did an excellent job with everything and I hope he does more films as an actor, director and writer. This movie is destined to be a cult classic, especially with Norman Reedus fans. I like how the film "reincarnated" many characters. Some men came back as women for example. I applaud Paul for that clever idea. The fighting scenes were excellent. Billy Drago's scenes were humorous by playing a man dressed in drag. The film transforms from the past into the future smoothly and goes back and forth without confusing you. Thank you Paul for that.I am disappointed with those who panned the film heavily on here. They were either not paying attention, thinking of another film, or are just plain mean.If you are a fan of David Carradine and have yet to see this film, you must. This was his final role.
siaratyr I'm not going to waste your time giving you a synopsis. You've already read that. Instead I'm going to tell you my thoughts. You see, the first time I watched this movie I wasn't sure what I was expecting. Indie films are not something I have a lot of experience with. In fact I believe this was the first one I have knowingly watched. I went into it expecting what you see in a Hollywood film. That was my mistake. It's not a Hollywood film. It tells a story based on the Templars but it's not a history lesson. I have come to understand that this style of storytelling has my heart. It's quirky, & fun. It has a few moments that are very hot. And I came out of it wondering what I had missed because of my own expectations. I have since watched it again, several times in fact. Mr. Sampson has made a film that I spot something else in, nearly every time I watch. He has an active imagination and I feel lucky that he's so willing to share with us.
iheartcandyhearts I had high expectations for this film ever since I saw the first trailer. The film's target audience seemed pretty predictable, but with Paul Sampson I knew he'd deliver more. I'm in love with his performance in "Whacked" and "Clown", and his versatility, so you already know he plans on succeeding on many levels, and as usual he doesn't disappoint. The beauty of it all is that this is an original story, and so I'm looking forward to ALL his future projects.Let me start by saying the story itself will start off kind of cryptic, but if you analyze it properly you'll keep up. The acting was so spot on with these characters, their beauty was only a plus. I had been worrying about Sofie Norman's capabilities, not having heard of her before, but she did great I must admit. Ingrid Sonray was my personal favorite, and she portrayed her character Amy perfectly. Norman Reedus was spectacular and Paul Sampson came off adorable and fun at times and when needed pretty damn menacing, showing the range that only few actors have and he commands at will. Udo Kier was fantastic as well, and Billy Drago played a very enjoyable character. You quickly embrace them all, despite the fact you know little about them to start with. I don't want to spoil anything but I will quickly go over what makes this film so enjoyable. The soundtrack and score were amazing to listen to, giving the film a very surreal feel to it. It keeps the film energetic yet appropriately ominous and dark when necessary. Every scene is just insane and a real treat to watch.Let alone being a superbly visual film overall, it works on a psychological stand point as well. Its themes are powerful, best summed up that reality can be harsh and cruel, but it is better to die true than live in damnation. I believe 'Night of the Templar' is going to be a hard hitter for 2013 and for years to come.
