infinitespace9 A guy I was interested in at the time loved this movie and wanted me to see it, so I gave it a chance. I tried to like it but I could not get past the immaturity of outlook on life and the fact that it tried hard to be inspiring. The characters were impossible to relate to. The person I ended up feeling more sorry for was the guy's fiancé who was led to believe one thing about the relationship only to be dropped on her ass for the most trite reasons. I felt like she was the one we knew most about and next to nothing interesting about this guy. It tries too hard to be clever that all of the characters personalities are put on the back burner and never elaborated on. The only thing I can say I enjoyed was getting to see Canada. As a non-Canadian all the references went over my head, but I don't fault the movie for that. Beautiful landscapes are about the only the this movie has going for it. The music was forgettable as it all ended up sounding the same. The movie was too full of itself to be inspiring. It squashed the actual inspiration with trying too hard to be inspirational.
SnoopyStyle Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson) has stage-4 cancer and is given 10% chance to live. At most, he has a couple of years left. First thing that occurs to him is that he has an excuse to cancel his wedding to Samantha (Liane Balaban). He decides to buy an old motorcycle despite the disapproval of Samantha. When he rolls up the rim of his Tim Horton cup, it says "Go West Young Man". So he goes west on his bike for a road trip before returning for treatment and eventually his wedding.I don't particularly like the Campbell Scott narration. I don't mind him as an actor, but his voice by itself is grinding. This is a charming little Canadian movie by Michael McGowan. It does need a bit more quirky to raise the interest. This movie is chalk full of Canadiana. However that is not enough to make this a great movie. It just needs more than what it is... which is a gentle little Canadian travelogue mixed with an emotionally simple story.
litlebit75 First of all, yes I am sap! lol Truthfully I watched because of Joshua Jackson. I am so thankful I did.So many times, actually inevitable for every human being, we get caught up in our day to day lives, take absolutely everything in our lives for granted, ourselves, life, our kids, family, friends, jobs, electricity, God, everything. This movie puts things into perspective. What if you only had one day, one week, one month. I don't know about everyone else, but I know for me, that isn't enough. We are not promised our next breath whether you believe in the Lord, or any higher power or non at all. Bottom line anything could happen at any time. After this was over, I just sat there and thought for a long time to myself. This movie said to me, WAKE UP!!!! Life is passing you by, you take too much for granted, LIVE, tell the people you love that you love them, don't settle just because its easy. I think everyone should see this flick! Excellent insight. Not to mention the beautiful scenes of Canada. I am from Kansas, never been to Canada. Absolutely gorgeous.Great movie, greatly written, great acting. The whole nine yards. Yes it is a little slow. So what, slow down and enjoy a little bit of life!!!
Maurizio This is what I call a real gem. I have just finished watching this movie, and I'm still thinking so deeply about it. I'm a travel fanatic, what would I do if I were to find out what Ben finds out about his health and destiny? Probably just the same. It's impossible not to think about "Into the wild" when watching this movie and make a comparison. Both film are great, in different ways though, this one is probably more into introspection, the story is more "pruned" when compared to the American movie, the characters met by the main man are different, calmer, probably less American.I loved everything about this film: the landscapes, the message, the characters (Sam is a good and kind hearted girl which deserves better in her life, the families are described as warm and loving), the literary quotations, the music, everything.A gem really not to be missed. And Canada, wait for me, I'll be travelling there some time in the future!
