mylkione It puzzles me to constantly read the now commonplace negative reviews on this film. I've watched this film many times over the last nearly forty years and in actuality, the initial iteration in the Star Trek film franchise comes closest to hard sci fi than any other. This movie only suffers from its location in time, in that pre-2000 generations grew up reading Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury and other great I. Lieu of the schlock fantasy pulp so popular now.Everything about this film actually was far ahead of it's time, even the uniforms which were wildly lambasted after it's release.Yes, the uniforms. Look at the critical scene where in they discover V'Ger to be a Voyager probe...The clothes they wear look exactly like your local Lululemon or even Nike attire so many of us don in our 21st century spare time. The tone of the movie was satisfyingly devoid of the hamfisted and cute attempts at humor that would plague every other film after this, aside from Wrath of course. The effects haven't aged well as we've moved into 4k resolution and the Styrofoam and wire becomes ever more embarrassing but some re edits have been performed. In no other movie with the original cast is Shatner more a part of an ensemble than this, and if anything, it's Nimoy's magnum opus.
Lin2050 Among all these "Star Trek" movies, 1979~2016, this is the only one that's reasonably interesting. Probably the closest thing to a "Trumbull movie". Unfortunately, it will never get the attention of, and be "re-discovered" by, many people interested in visuals, real science fiction, and space, simply because it has the label "Star Trek" attached to its title
Filipe Neto This film debuted at a time when sci fi were very popular and came about following a TV series that reached levels of popularity that are still enviable today. These assumptions could have made this movie into an icon but that never happened. The director's exaggerated ambition has created a nearly three-hour film that does little or nothing good. The rhythm of the film is almost a torture session: it creeps into unnecessary scenes without any reason. It even seems that the editing team just did not want to get bored doing their job decently. The film has no screenplay for such length. In fact, it has no script, it has an idea for a script that did not find any happy development. The main actors (William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley) were perfectly up to the challenge, but the rest of the cast left unwanted, lifeless interpretations to match the scenery and costumes that look like pajamas or nurse's robes. In fact, everything on that ship looks like a hospital corridor. If all this had been different, we would probably be facing a classic as dear as the original series. Unfortunately this did not happen.
Eric Stevenson In a weird way, I kind of recommend this movie. It's kind of weird how the last "Star Trek" movie I watch (well before the new ones come out) happens to be the first. It really is interesting to see where such a long running sci-fi movie franchise began. I actually really do like the appearance of the film. Already it looks like a step up from the TV show. Granted, I've never seen a full episode of that. For me, it really did seem like a long episode of the show. As I said in my "Doctor Who" review, that's not really a good thing. This is the longest "Star Trek" movie ever made or at least it's tied with "Star Trek: Into Darkness" a far superior movie. This film suffers from lingering shots of space that are pointless. It's irritating with such a long movie. Interestingly enough, in a certain way it did work a bit. It made the movie really leisurely to watch. I mean, it's still boring, but it was something you could take your time with. The visual effects really do hold up. The story itself is okay, with the characters journeying to stop an anomaly from reaching Earth. It's pretty much a mediocre movie, but it's still interesting given how significant it is as a film. **1/2
