LiveFire1 This is literally my favorite film I have ever seen. Made by the animators that make Appleseed which is the best CGI films until this. It is actually better then the first movie from 1997, with better action, acting "voice acting" and its realistic science fiction style is unmatched in any film/anime/CGI I have seen. Its story is a solid 10/10 with no plot holes or stupid mystery box gimmicks. It is fantastically paced and with a great adult plot consisting of just the right amount of complexity, violence, profanity, and nudity. A true master piece of R rated Adult CGI animation. I truly do not know why this film does not have an 8+ on IMDb, it certainly deserves it. If you like the original film and realistic science fiction made for actual adults this is the film for you. The only people who are not giving this amazing film good reviews must not have liked the original film or high quality CGI that is actually made for adult audiences.....
Mason Bliss After the disappointment of the third movie not quite living up to the expectations I had for it, this addition to the franchise was a sigh of relief, and honestly a fun ride. The thing that made the first movie so great was that it WAS corny, over the top, and sucked you into a universe you thought would be fantastic to live in. This movie gives us what we want. Action, simple story line, and actual empathy with the characters. I honestly felt like I was part of the story at times. While the movie certainly isn't quite 10 star material, it delivers on all fronts the elements that made the first movie so much fun. Plus, if you're a die hard fan of the series, you'll enjoy it just because you get to see the continuation of some of your favorite characters. The CGI was cool but in my opinion it would have been cooler if they just made it live action. At times it felt like I was watching an extended video game cut scene (when are they giving us a Starship Troopers video game???). After the first 30 minutes I barely noticed it, however, and just allowed myself to watch the movie as it was. Overall, it's fun, it's blood soaked, it has just the right amount of nudity and the franchise's attempt at wit to make it very likable. Sometimes a bit predictable and corny, but again, that's what made the first movie such a delight. 8/10, would recommend to sci-fi fans, Starship Trooper fans, and anyone looking to watch a fun movie.
cedde6 There is here very little added to Paul Verhoeven's misunderstood masterpiece. In fact the Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez and Carl Jenkins characters and even Basil Poledouris's theme tune are all back to join in a new group of tough-as-nail marines sent to rescue the survivors of Fort Casey and destroy the bug hive upon which the fort has been built. I won't be revealing too much by saying that things won't go according to plan and they'll end up trying to prevent a bug invasion on Earth. This Japanese take on Robert A. Heinlein mythology more or less try to replicate Verhoeven's 1994 blockbuster with mixed results. It is action packed, standing proudly shoulders to shoulders with the crazy Dutchman in terms of violence, and with barely no slowing down in the pace. Needless to say, the notion of characterization is here merely academic which I don't think was the point of the film to begin with so that can be excused I suppose. However this makes this movie a confusing experience at times for so many male characters actually looking very much alike while sharing a similar type of voice. But for me, the main let down however reside in the fact that I couldn't shake the impression of watching a video game with its many levels: a very brief explanation of the mission is followed by a shooting session to the next brief explanation of the next mission and so on and so forth, making the feeble attempts of humanization of its synthetic characters laughable. In the end, the resulting piece becomes a series of interchangeable battles devoid of any emotional impact. At best, it might entertain a certain target audience for a short while but I wage it will certainly be quickly forgotten by almost everyone.
dwpollar 1st watched 12/10/2012 – 7 out of 10(Dir-Shinji Aramaki): Well made CGI movie that continues the bug-alien tradition of 3 other live action "Starship Troopers" movies -- but really betters at least the original, in my opinion, because it focuses of the action. Although the human animation isn't 100% believable, the beautiful backgrounds, props and the animation of the Queen bug is first rate. The makers of this movie also create a very good story that is slow going at first with some corny lines thrown in, but they make up for it with how they pull everything together. The movie is primarily about a lady captain who's ship is overtaken by something unknown and the troops plan on hunting it down and bringing it back. What is discovered is that the Queen bug (created by a mad scientist trying to figure out how to outwit the bugs) is controlling it after they captured it from the humans. The first half of the movie is used to setup the story and the characters and the last half focuses on the action. This is definitely not a movie for kids as there is CGI nudity(which is actually pretty revealing), a lot of violence, rough language, and lots of splattering bugs. There is very little humor here as the filmmakers went one direction with this one and pulled it off pretty well. This is similar to Aliens 2 in that it goes straight for the jugular and doesn't hold back once it gets going. I wasn't quite sure I was going to accept this medium for this movie at first, but it captured my attention with it's storytelling and visuals. This is a unique movie by a Japanese director, with a very American-like feel to the story but is a lot of fun and is a very worthwhile addition to this franchise.
