capone666 The ExterminatorVigilantes in the 1980s were everyday people who just lost faith in McGruff the Crime Dog.And while the lawful mascot isn't mentioned in this action movie, his presence is felt.POW John (Robert Ginty) tries to assimilate back in NYC when the Ghetto Ghouls break into where he works and kills his co-worker. Enraged he grabs a flamethrower and exacts revenge. Unsatisfied, John moves on to busting up the mafia and a child sex ring. Dubbed the Exterminator by the press, John is dogged by a determined detective (Christopher George). Dubbed a Death Wish doppelganger by critics on its released, this obvious nod to the seminal street vigilante blockbuster also had a second-rate sequel. Decades on and this alleged knockoff still holds its own with some pretty intense interrogation and death scenes that rival modern remakes.Furthermore, scorching thugs is a double win because it also feeds the neighbourhood. dworldeater The Exterminator is writer/director James Glickenhaus best film that falls somewhere between Death Wish and First Blood with nods to Taxi Driver. This grindhouse action classic pulls no punches on tackling this material, set in the mean streets of NYC circa 1979/1980(a truly dangerous place during that period). After an altercation with local street gang leaves his best buddy from Nam in the hospital John Eastland (Robert Ginty) takes to the streets to fight his one man war on crime. Robert Ginty was up for the task as The Exterminator and is unrelentless and unrepenting in his methods and efforts to remove the scum of the Earth, from putting a mobster in a meatgrinder, setting a chicken hawk pimp on fire, shooting a pervert child rapist with explosive tipped bullets and leaving members of The Ghetto Ghouls for dead to have their faces gnawed off by rats. This is all set in 1980 NYC as a backdrop, that is bleak, depressing and gritty in style and approach. The Exterminator is very violent, but very well paced and well made low budget action flick that follows in the footsteps of Death Wish and Rolling Thunder and is 100 percent recommended to fans of the aforementioned films. Christopher George makes a memorable appearance as a cop that is investigating The Exterminator. Overall, The Exterminator is great vigilante action. Awesome, my kind of movie!
Leofwine_draca A tough, adult exploitation film in which violence and retribution are the main themes, this is still as relevant today as it was thirty-odd years ago when the film was first released. Essentially the story of one man's war against crime, this is pretty depressing viewing with a downbeat ending, so be warned. The words tough and gritty have never been so apt and the graininess of the film adds to the harsh, cold feel throughout.Robert Ginty (SCARAB) - in probably his most notorious role - is the everyday kind of hard-working guy who just happens to be a ruthless cold-blooded murderer when the time comes at night, when he goes out to "clean the scum off the streets" as Travis Bickle might say. Ginty pulls off the character of the disturbed but honourable John Eastland very well, and manages to be both frightening and almost likable, certainly believable, in his quest. Underrated stuntman Steve James (VIGILANTE ) gives good support as the best friend, while Christopher George fits the role of a hard-bitten detective like a glove, dressed in a dirty vest and blue anorak, and makes the role his own.The film concentrates on the various ways that Ginty dispatches his victims, with only George's slow investigation in between (there is a pointless sub-plot about George's relationship with one of my least favourite actresses Samantha Eggar, and also some charming scenes of him frying a sausage over the mains which sum up his matter-of-fact on-the-street character as a whole).Although the film only has one scene of strong gore, the series of deaths are impactful and pretty disturbing which is why it gained its reputation as a hard-edged exploitation thriller, nastier even than DEATH WISH. One gore scene is at the beginning of the movie and was one of Stan Winston's first effects - a captured soldier has his throat slashed. Disturbing stuff. A sequel followed three years later, but with little of the impact of this no-budget quickie. THE EXTERMINATOR is a very frightening film, in the portrayal of a man at his wit's end, the horrors of the Vietnam war, and the mentally scarred soldiers, the powerlessness of the authorities and the depths to which society will succumb. Essential viewing for vigilante fans, I think.
chribren "The Exterminator" is an Action-movie, directed by James Glickenhaus, 1980.Basic plot: John Eastland (Robert Ginty) and Michael Jefferson (Steve James) are two friends who are coming home to New York from the gruesome Vietnam war. Sadly, a few years later, the dark colored Michael gets brutally attacked by a ruthless gang of thugs, and gets paralyzed for the rest of his life. When Eastland gets to hear about this, he sets out to kill many of the thugs, and later on every criminals he meets. On the other side, detective Dalton (Christopher George) is assigned to the case, and will do anything to stop "the exterminator".This film is very brutal, even for a action-flick that deals with vengeance. Whenever scenes of violence occur on screen, they mostly end with a grim result. Some of the notable scenes that must be mentioned here include the realistic beheading scene during the opening Vietnam war, and the scene in which Eastland sends a man into a meat grinder.I really love how Eastland quotes his catchphrase "if you're lying, I'll be back", while threatening a tied up thug with a flamethrower. For some reasons, I also find Mr. George's appearance as the detective to be great. Not only did this film suffer various censorship while being released around the world, this film was banned from being shown in Norwegian cinemas. It was later released on VHS by the now defunct NOVIO A/S, only to become the very first video movie to get banned in 1984 in relation to the heated topic being "video violence". Since early 2000s, this film is now completely legal in it's uncut version, hence the fact I have a Norwegian DVD copy containing this version.Do you like action-movies that deal with vengeance, this film is truly a must-see. Actually, I don't hesitate to call this film one of the greatest "vengeance movies" I've seen in several decades, and therefore I give this film an overall rating of 10/10. A similar movie to be highly recommended is the 1974-movie "Death Wish" with Charles Bronson. The other three movies from James Glickenhaus I've seen include "The Soldier" (1982), "Blue Jean Cop" (1988) and "McBain" (1991).
