ninabruzdzinski This film was very shocking. At first, it went how one would expect it to go. Trying to better your name and make a more meaningful life for yourself while of course, finding love. However, it shows just how much appearances really mean... just because you are high up in social class, does not translate into being a good person. What Kelly discovers of her soon to be husband is shocking and appalling and the way she reacts is more than appropriate. I find it very misogynistic how he tries to reason with her at first, claiming she too has done bad things. The past is the past and people are able to make better changes for themselves Overall I thought this was a very good film.
nbbaiyuchen The first few minutes of this film are pretty amazing. I didn't really know much about the film going in other than that it's a pulpy noir and I believe that's the best way to watch the film. It completely throws you into the world of this character Kelly and she's an interesting one. The film is about her and her struggle to survive in society. It's refreshing to see such a strong female character in a film from the early 60's. The rest of the film is pretty tame compared to the bombastic beginning. I mean there are some pretty cool moments here. THE NAKED KISS is a film that is ahead of its time; honest and fun. It falls short of being one of the greatest noir's ever but with a strong female character; interesting story of corruption and some truly great scenes here and there.
rewolfsonlaw Others who understand Samuel Fuller's brave, groundbreaking daring genius have written excellent reviews of this highly unusual if technically lacking film that from 1964 explores topics still shocking today. I'm not easily forgiving or surprised, but "The Naked Kiss" manages to overcome its faults (wooden acting, sometimes bludgeoning but perhaps necessary sermonizing)by producing what no other film or film maker that I know of did at the time, maybe still. It is a film about the seamy underside of life and its human actors that tells it like it almost is, as much as it could at the time. Like one alcoholic sharing his story with another, it works because we believe in the sincerity of the storyteller. Forget all the low budget criticism; what studio actor would dare have been associated with a film about prostitutes, abortion, violence and pedophilia, all in the perspective of a prophet revealing the hypocrisy of moral society. The biblical prophets were unpopular in their time, too, and Sam Fuller remains a visionary whose work and voice are and remain absolutely unique.
joedebritz This is a very innovative film. Because it is an independent film, the makers were able to have more freedom with the content. This film deals with the underbelly of society, including topics of prostitution and pedophilia. While some might find this disturbing, I find it refreshing, there is no use ignoring the parts of life that we care not to think about. This is a real film, with real characters, and a very real story. I enjoy it because of that. It also has a very unique feel to it, I wouldn't be surprised if contemporary directors like Quentin Tarentino and David Fincher pulled inspiration from it. It is important to have films like this one that break precedents that need to be broken.
