Mr Black Well, I enjoyed this film even though it's now 13 years old. Has a real small town feel to it in a good way. The story is okay, if a little silly. The best part for me were the performances. Gene Hackman, of course can do no wrong in my opinion. He's going to be good at what ever he does. I really like Ray Romano. I thought it would be difficult to watch without thinking of Everybody Loves Raymond, but he holds his own. What I really enjoyed was all the additional small town characters that make this film so likable. Especially Reuben.... "I was MY IDEA!" All in all, a fun film. Not sure if I will watch it again, but I'm sure there will be a day when I want to see a light fun film. It will also be good for my future career as a professional movie critic.
Geoffrey DeLeons Before I watched the movie, I was not sure I wanted to watch a match-up between titan actor Gene Hackman and receeding standup comedian Ray Romano. I was wrong. Romano's un-pretentiosness was perfect for this part. It was Hackman who was unable to sedate himself enough to interface comfortably with small-town life. I'm sure that some of this incongruity is the result of the script and direction written for him, but the bluster was carried a bit far in the movie. This is not a bad movie. It is a rather good one. It turned out the opposite of what I expected, as I've already said. I appreciate the message imparted by Welcome to Mooseport: Honesty, consistency, humility and hard work are traits that are truly valued and valuable.., especially if your girlfriend is tougher than you.
cpetrosky1 If your looking for a film with joke after joke or gag after gag, this film is not it. This film is a story about what happens when a popular former President retires to his hometown and gets involved with the local residents, one of which is Ray Romano. It's a sweet story of character development and romance that might be a little off the beaten track. Gene Hackman is superb as always, and Ray Romano, is well...Ray. Christine Baranski provides an excellent portrayal of an ex First Lady. Quirky town folk and beautiful scenery add to the film. If you like plots with relationships and character development, you'll enjoy this film. If you need chase scenes and explosions, or gag after gag, you'll need to go elsewhere.
smfarnsworth I watched this on SKY the other night and really, really wanted to like it. Unfortunately though it simply killed two hours of my life that I'll never get back. It was 'pleasant' and 'nice' - not two words you associate with a comedy. I smiled occasionally but didn't raise a titter once..! How he needed Frank, Marie, Robert, Deborah and the kids to move to Mooseport with him.I expect better things from Gene Hackman. It must have been an offer too good to turn down and kill some time for him between proper movie roles? The movie was largely forgettable - but not so unmemorable that I won't get tricked into watching it again....
