shannen-l-c 'Would You Rather' is by no means going to win any awards for being the best horror movie of the last decade, but it certainly delivers. The premise is pretty straight forward and what you get is exactly what it says on the tin - a bunch of adults playing a sadistic game of Would You Rather. What's interesting and gripping about this movie is that it feels very realistic and as though this is something that could happen or already has happened. It hits home that when people have enough money they're powerful enough to do whatever they please and get their kicks in whatever sinister way they see fit. The victims of the game are all their own people with their own back-stories and reasons for taking part in the game. With the exception of one or two of the characters, it's very easy as a viewer to sympathise with these people's dilemmas and understand their motivators for being there. Throughout the movie it has you questioning humanity and morals and leaves you wondering what choices you'd make if put in the same situation. None of the choices are easy and they all have dire consequences. It's interesting to see how the different characters react to the situations and which ones take the selfish route instead of the selfless. Though there isn't particularly much of a build-up and a lack of tension or fear, there's certainly a lot of gore which should please horror fans. But ultimately, the only fear there is lies in imagining you yourself were in the same situation and how terrifying it would be. 'Would You Rather' is ultimately a story about humanity. About how humans interact and react in the most impossible situations and when under pressure. It's a lesson in the consequence of our actions and decisions and how they impact others. The twist at the end is one I didn't see coming and really reinforces the idea of morality and consequences of actions that echoes throughout the movie. Although it's a simple movie, it's definitely worth a watch for horror fans.
gwnightscream This 2012 thriller stars Brittany Snow, Jeffrey Combs and Logan Miller. Snow (Pitch Perfect) plays Iris, a young woman who is trying to make ends meet and taking care of her ill brother, Raleigh (Miller) who needs a bone-marrow transplant. Combs (Re-Animator) plays Lambrick, a doctor/specialist who offers to help her by inviting her to his mansion along with 7 others to play a sinister game, "Would You Rather?" where the winner will be given a great sum of money. This film sort of mixes torture elements of "Hostel," "Saw" & "House on Haunted Hill" which starts off ok, but goes downhill turning depressing. Snow & Combs aren't bad in it and I'd only give this a try if you're into horror/thriller flicks.
cmovies-99674 PROS: The thing that I liked most about this movie would have to be the acting. You had people who could show genuine terror as well as actors who showed true insanity. The movie offered you such a wide variety of characters which was nice because I was given my own would you rather. Would I rather this person dies, or this person. I also really liked how light hearted the movie felt. I understand how dark the movie is, so it was quite nice to have a release character to sort of break up the darkness. This sort of dark comedic vibe lasted through the entirety of the film, even the ending, which I liked, had a slight humor to it.CONS: This movie lagged. If there is anything at all that I hate the most in horror movies are movies that build slowly, or not at all, for no specific reason. This was one of those movies. I couldn't tell if the climax happened 25 minutes too soon, or they just didn't have one. Either way I felt bored. The final and most perilous thing would be the aggravation this movie caused me. I went in to the move expecting to see gore, because the movie is a torture film, but I barely saw any blood. They really missed the mark on this one.www.chorror.com
longcooljolie This movie has been on Netflix, where I have watched it at least five times because I really appreciate well-done shocker movies. The major factor setting this one apart from similar movies is the acting. In the genre it's really easy to lapse into over-the-top histrionics or fall into clichés of the genre, which are too numerous to mention and for readers of this review, you probably know what they are anyway. It's an ensemble cast of eight people who show up at a mysterious dinner given by an extremely wealthy man who offers promises of financial help if they are willing to take part in a "game." That premise alone would normally send up glaring red flags, but it's clear that all the dinner guests are taken in by the host's (skillfully portrayed by Jeffrey Combs) polite and convivial manner. While it is an ensemble cast, the script and cinematography benefit from being told through a desperate young woman's eyes (Iris, portrayed by Brittany Snow). Early in the movie we learn that she is desperately looking for a job to aid her in helping care for her critically ill brother. The other seven dinner guests are painted in broad strokes, but after all it is a 90 minute movie, and the bulldog-ish butler, Bevans, also comes to the fore in a big way as the action progresses. There are enough twists and turns to make the story even more compelling and when the "game" starts after a luscious dinner, the plot gets cranking. The movie's only shortcoming, at least to me, was the generic musical score. Maybe after getting decent actors and making sure the cinematography was good, they only had enough money to hire somebody with a Casio organ and told him or her, just make it sound spooky. Of course, this is very minor and "Would you Rather," which has been unfairly dismissed as a "Saw" ripoff or torture porn, is actually a must-see for any horror fan.
