Synopsis

Seeking the chance to build a better future, a group of courageous pioneers departs Earth for Carpathia, a newly discovered planet in a distant galaxy. Led by President Richard Tate and his core team of Stella, Cass and Fleur, the pioneers settle in the town of Forthaven, creating a society there alongside expeditionaries Mitchell and Jack. Having embraced all the challenges that come with forging a new beginning, the townspeople work hard to preserve what they've built on Carpathia, and even as they long for those left behind, there is optimism about the future. But while they try to learn from mistakes made on Earth, there is no avoiding the human pitfalls of love, greed, lust and loss.

mummychic12 I like the idea of this show...colonizing a new planet and the challenges it entails...but the show is lacking in a solid plot line that actually seems to be going somewhere significant. I felt like each episode introduced new and confusing elements that didn't seem to contribute to the long game. That said, I like a few of the characters even though we don't know much about them. Tipper is one of my favorites, as is the Cass/Fleur ship that they were starting. Eric Mabius plays a convincing sleazy politician/saboteur. But I just don't feel connected to most of the characters that they haven't taken the time to build up enough in these first episodes. Some might argue that 8 episodes isn't enough time to make those types of character connections, but this series reminds me of a space western and well, as anyone who has seen Joss Whedon's Firefly can attest, you can do a lot to garner love from viewers without much time to do it in. That said, I think I'll go watch Firefly now.
albalovescholo-528-59939 in the first 2 episodes they established quite clearly that if this is what remains of humans at this point in evolution, they all deserve to die.the majority of the heroes are revealed to be murderers, Mengele-style monsters, sociopaths, psychopaths, and generally stupid...like box of hair dumb.i spent 15 bucks for the right to witness an abortion that happened four years ago; the lack of a second season is no mystery to me. beyond the requisite plot holes, i cannot imagine that many people were able to connect emotionally with these characters. human frailties are one thing, but the only characters i have seen worth my investing any interest have been killed off in the same episode in which they first appear.they tricked me with the guy who played Apollo in the Battlestar Galactica reboot in the pilot-- that one is on me! this has taught me that before purchasing ANY products from the sci-fi team at BBC/ITV/CBC i need to check the cast list here, to determine whether or not the actor(s) i am most interested in as a sign of relative quality have been used as a cameo in the furtherance of a Bait-and-Switch.sad.
pensman Production values are pretty good for this series but it plods. The first six episodes really provide background exposition but even then it's not complete. Episode seven gets off on a tangent and episode eight doesn't really provide a conclusion as someone must have hoped there would be a second series but the series was canceled because of poor viewer ship. Eric Mabius is the epitome of unctuous and makes for a good villain. If you do decide to watch then you have to watch the first two episodes to get the basic background but when you get to the end and there is no real resolution there is a sense you have wasted eight hours.
packdude I've seen all seasons of Spooks (aka MI-5) which is a pretty good piece of work from the BBC, along with some of their other works. However, this show is, ummm, not as good. Weird writing (I can't describe it any better than that), slow disconnected pace, a bit preachy, and acting extremes of wooden or crazy, except for Jamie Bamber of BSG fame. Despite having the most talent and audience connectivity of all the cast, they somehow managed to kill off his character in the first episode. Perhaps it was his choice. Or maybe he was just bait to get people watching the show?I'm sorry, but I have to say that Hermione Norris needs to retire, or do something else for a living. To steal an idea from one of my favorite YouTube producers, she's more like a giant walking Ambien pill than an actor. She was miscast a security operative in MI-5, and also in this series. When there are lots of strong intelligent women actors out there who would play that part much better, why her? Plus did I mention she's kind of boring? Sorry ma'am, but it's true. The music, cinematography, and other effects are well executed, with South Africa providing a fresh and unique filming backdrop. To their credit, the technical folks usually do a good job on films these days. It's the artistic content that so often needs a tune-up.I guess I can't totally dis the show, as it's still far better than anything I could ever produce. And it did have potential if it could have been improved over several seasons. Not all good TV shows have started out strong (JAG, Seinfeld, X-Files come to mind). And some good shows never made it past the first season (Firefly). But we'll never know what this could have become. I'm afraid Outcasts will be added to the ever-growing list of shows that help me zone out and go to sleep at night. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. I like something to help me unwind at night that has zero calories.
