emmetlang-42622 How did Canadians put up with this for 6 years? Holy Crap! Is there any cliché that isn't used in this first episode? Every character is a cliché, every situation is a cliché, every relationship is a cliché, and every line of dialog is horribly clichéd. Ugh! If this were made in the '70s, you might say it was original, or at least a light hearted ripoff of the PI shows of the day. But this is absolute warmed over drivel.
tinyone2 I watched all the seasons of the show. This is a clean and entertaining show with lovable characters. The stories don't always follow the path one expects but doesn't divert too far away either. The main character Jake Doyle is a good role model and his family is instantly lovable. The show doesn't use swearing, vulgarity, gore or cruelty to create drama, so isn't as dark and cynical as other shows available at present. WhIle the stories are clever and witty, it is not overly technical and don't try to be too clever. As such I found this to be more relaxing viewing. It reminds me of Knight Rider and Macyver. The show also got better from season to season, except for the episodes where Sloan was introduced. I found this character and her storyline a difficult fit with the rest of the show. Seasons 5 and 6 was also not as enjoyable as the earlier seasons as I don't like to see the protagonist struggle. The last episode of season 6 is my all time favorite though! I absolutely loved it.
fogliad I love this show, being a mainlander it is rich in NFLD culture just like when I visited.Allan developed a great Canadian series. it is right up to par with American TV series but set in lovely St. John's, NFLD.Allan came up with great shows each and every week for all the seasons. A great cast with interesting guest stars. We also loved the convergence with Murdoch mysteries.Even my children loved to see the episodes after school. We are all very sad to see it go and still watch the re-runs on CBC.There is little from the great east coast that runs on regular episodes but this was the best. The theme song by great big sea is just the cherry on top of the east coast sundae.
BILLYBOY-10 I just watched episode one thru twelve and enjoyed to locations and visual shots here and there of various parts of town. The opening noise called "Oh Yeah" deserves a huge "Oh No". It is loud, lyrics consist of two offensively shouted lyrics and is nonsense. In the beginning they used to insert similarly loud noise (passed off as music) between scenes but that seems to have softened towards later episodes. And now for the cast:The Hero: Quirky, lots of human frailties, faults and goofiness. Works very well. Could soloeasily if the father somehow left the show.Malachy the Father: Familiar face, only real purpose is to wisecrack. Could be left out.Niki: The doctor soon to be ex-wife Wac job. Too schizo, gets tiresome. Please go.Des: The teen kid goof ball. I like him, think he adds to the showTinny: The ballsy teen daughter. All shows need a ballsy teen daughter. Formula.Rose: Malachy's Susan Sarandon look-alike lady friend. OK, like her better than Malachy.Leslie: The policewoman. I like her the best. She add more interest to plots than any other. The Horn Toad blond lawyer friend: He is always fun, and his appearances nice and short. In a couple of episode we had Rose's husband just released from prison. Uncomfortable. In another, a long lost brother Christian shows up, turns out he is just out of rehab and a bunch of crooked lawyers are trying to do him in for whistle blowing. Uncomfortable. Streamed these in the U.S. via my Acorn membership, anticipate future series hoping the sub-plot characters stop and hope the writing gets more crisp.
