nobletraveler If you look at this as some other adventure cartoon, OK. Try to visualize it as part of the Johnny Quest world? Nah. First, the fake Race Bannon accent. They made him sound like he's from some backwoods hills and he seems amateurish at best. The original Race Bannon could think on his feet and wasn't a smart ass all the time. This one goes to the police first, then doesn't know what to do or acts like an over testosterone G.I. Johnny acts immature not responsible like the original. The animation comes off as cheap. Hadji seems to be the only one who is still wise from the original. Episodes poorly written. A cartoon like Johnny Quest deserves better and more professional treatment. The 80's episodes reboot succeeded where this set should have never been approved. I do like the idea of Race Bannon's daughter joining the team, but it's a shame that this set of cartoons was used to expand her character. Boo to the producer John Eng and the others for not staying true to the original concept that made Johnny Quest a favorite among the fans. I can only hope the movie planned stays true and not try to make Johnny Quest something it's not like this garbage did. With all the "professionals" involved with this, I'm very surprised it isn't of caliber quality and writing.
David Roggenkamp The original "Jonny Quest" was reaired among other classic cartoons when Cartoon Network first appeared on cable. It was a series I was quite fond of and nearly two decades later I was ecstatic to learn there was actually a remake of this cartoon. This one was labeled "The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest" and I could help but feel it was a throwback to "The Real Ghostbusters". More interesting was the fact that this remake is dated for 1996; only a few years after Cartoon Network itself graced the scene; yet I never remember it during the initial run through. No use crying over spilt milk right?Jonny is the son of a one Dr. Quest that is a scientist. The two of them are accompanied by Hadji and Race Bannon as both friends and body guards. The remake also uses an interesting gimmick in the form of "Jesse Bannon" the daughter of Race Bannon, and I can only assume the love interest of Jonny. They are normally at a science compound, but the majority of the show follows them around the world as they explore different phenomenon. There is great potential here, as it is basically the same premise as the original series. The new series appears to be set in the era of release (90s) due to the fact it has numerous references, and indeed entire episodes devoted to pop culture items of the time. Saving whales? Check. The statues in Chile being alien artifacts? Yes. Sunken pirate ships with ghosts from over a century ago? Check on that also. These types of episodes (one shots) are where the series shines the strongest. It usually involves Dr. Quest and co. traveling around the world to explore a specific phenomenon, Jonny usually gets into some kind of trouble, either accompanied by Hadji, Jessy or both; and then Dr. Quest and Race Bannon need to find and rescue them. It just so happens Jonny and co. also find ways to deal with their own situation and the group meets up for a happy ending. In the end it seems to be "Scooby Doo" style antics, only more streamlined and action oriented. However, the series does have one weak point. During a number of episodes, and indeed a lull in quality of what I assume is the first season; there are a number of characters and antagonists that make reoccurring appearances. A one "Ezekiel Rage" is hellbent on causing destruction because his wife and daughter were taken from him; a friendly alien takes the guise of Native American culture; alien technology also seems to be the rage for several episodes; and then there is a specific mad doctor that appears to be out to get the quests. He appears to have been in some kind of accident, but is capable of linking up with a virtual reality simulator called "Quest World". Not only is "Quest World" a virtual reality simulator developed by Dr. Quest, but it serves as a staging point for a number of episodes. Quest World starts out as a gimmick, but then entire episodes become devote to this as the entire protagonist cast must deal with the mad doctor attempting to hack, and otherwise meddle with their virtual reality system. This actually goes on for a number of episodes and takes away from the one shots that the series originally established. Virtual reality and the Internet were all the rage when this series first came out - so I can understand the influence; but did they need to overuse it to the extent that they did? It seemed like every two or three episodes was devoted to "Quest World" and the mad doctor's schemes to use and abuse it.I find the new series good; but to be blunt, I feel it is inferior to the original series. This new one seems to have a sloppy character design. Quest World is nothing more than a trite gimmick that lets Jonny Quest take center stage in something 'other' than what the series has previously established; the entire episodes devoted to Quest World are also an unwelcome nuisance that takes away from the style of the show. Some of the things they changed, such as Dr. Quest having black hair, as well as the lack of Bandit in many episodes seems to take away from the series. The series follows along more with plot devices and plot elements as opposed to the actual characters. When characters receive character development, it is in fact anyone but the main cast. "Jessy Bannon" is also clearly a token character at a time when "girl power" was still prevalent in the 90s; she was simply never in the original series. Lastly, what made the characters so strong in the original series (characterization), is strangely lacking in this new one. Rather than say Jonny learning his lesson, he repeatedly makes the same mistakes - amongst them seem to be getting into trouble in "Quest World". You get the idea. The series is worth a watch, but I've found other titles from "Cartoon Network" to also be stronger contenders and more worthy of view time - you may disagree.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/? p=11485).
rexshard93 I always enjoyed Hanna Barbera cartoons when I was young. They gave so many great cartoons. Along with SWAT Kats, this was another great show from them in 1990s. I didn't care for First Season with the exception of few good episodes with Ezekiel Rage in it (written by Glenn Leopold who later became Story editor/writer of second season). I love the second season. Most of Second Season crew of this show came from SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron. There are wonderful second season episodes like More than Zero, Ghost Quest, General Winter, and many others. My favorite episodes are Undersea Urgency, Village of the Doomed, Other Space, and The Dark Mountain. Glenn Leopold and Lance Falk are brilliant writers. They also wrote many episodes of SWAT Kats. One of the things I love about Jonny Quest Real Adventures Second Season is the limitations of the characters just like in SWAT Kats. Dr. Quest is an excellent scientist. But he doesn't have fighting skills and military experience of Race Bannon. Race Bannon doesn't have the scientific skills of Dr. Quest although he is an excellent fighter and has great deal of military experience. Jessie Bannon follows the footsteps of Dr. Quest in Science and has great deal of knowledge in Music. Hadji has great deal of philosophical knowledge. He also knows a lot about the field of technology especially with the computer and follows the footsteps of Dr. Quest in the field of technology. With Jonny Quest, he is a central character to the show due to the fact that he learns a little bit of everything from everybody around him. Although he can be impetuous, still his inquisitive mind and clever decisions often solve the problems. That is what I loved about the Second Season of Jonny Quest Real Adventures.
Deep_Eyes I loved this show. I used to watch it every night when I was a kid. I hated the old Jonny Quest cause it was so cheezy, but I loved the New one. It had a great Sci-Fi/Action plot. It had awesome graphics, especially when they went into Quest World. The show was canceled too soon. This was one of my most favorite TV shows of all time. I would give anything to see one just more episode, any episode cause I loved them all.
