David Arnold If you enjoy post-apocalyptic movies like 28 Days/Weeks Later then you may like Carriers, but be warned...Carriers isn't a patch on those two films. For one thing, Carriers is a much slower film than the 28 Days/Weeks Later films, which is one of the ingredients to it's downfall. Also, there isn't much action or real suspense either which is a pity because if it had these then it may well have been a much better film.Carriers just moves at such a slow pace, and apart from the odd moment here and there, it's actually a bit of a snorefest. There isn't really any depth to the film either. We start off right in the middle of the "apocalypse", which generally wouldn't be that bad if the story developed better and there was more of a background, but there's no real explanation about anything. We don't know what the cause of it was, and we don't know how it all came about. The only thing we really get to know is why the four main characters are driving across country and that's it. There just isn't much story or character development. And speaking of characters...two of the main four characters of Brian, Bobby, Danny, and Kate are pretty unlikable, and those are Brian and Bobby. I actually felt more for Frank (played by Christopher Meloni) and his daughter, Jodie, than those two. Their actions and way of thinking throughout the movie just ends up making them less & less endearing as time goes on and you end up hoping karma is following close by. Danny & Kate were really the only characters I liked from the main four (although I must admit that Kate just felt like an add-on as there wasn't much to her at all).I know you don't watch a post-apocalyptic film to feel good, and people can look for hidden meanings in Carriers all they like, but there are absolutely no feel good moments anywhere (even at the end), so be prepared for a pretty depressing movie.Carriers is just a below average thriller, and you'd be better off giving it a miss in all honesty.
SnoopyStyle Brothers Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Brian (Chris Pine) are traveling in a viral apocalyptic world with Bobby (Piper Perabo) and Kate (Emily VanCamp). They have rules. Avoid the infected. Disinfect anything they touched in the last 24 hours. The sick are already dead. They run into Frank (Christopher Meloni) who is out of gas, but his daughter Jodie (Kiernan Shipka) is infected. When their car is damaged beyond repair, they join up with Frank and his daughter to find a rumored cure. Things don't turn out and the quartet moves on to encounter others. This movie drops the audience into a world after everything has already gone to hell. The start is too pedestrian. I get the idea is to make a low budget indie. However the movie needs to start with action. It needs to give a good reason why the quartet is on the trip in the first place. Danny's explanation seems so childish. Traveling would logically seem to be a dangerous thing to do. There are just a lot of questionable things that the people keep doing. These idiots are just not likable. They keep doing stupid things. Brian almost crash two cars on the open road because he's an idiot. Brian is a domineering angry Ahole and it drives me crazy. Why is he poking around in the pool? Then just for more idiocy, he drives a golf cart just as bad. They lay out rules and yet they are all ignored. These people should have seen it all and yet they are wildly emotional about everything. These people suffer from self-inflicted wounds and it makes it difficult to root for them.
Namron7 I'm tired of these 'science fiction' films which are made with no reference to junior science. It's very annoying, and it spoils all the other worthy stuff such as good acting, plot, direction and production. A scientific adviser would cost what....$500 per day? For, what.... two days? Why not invest in that so as to avoid obvious nonsense such as:1. There was no point in quarantining the father and daughter in the back of the SUV. The whole SUV was infected, and Chlorox would not make any difference. Nor would polythene and masking tape 2. There is no point in differentiating the degree of potential infectiousness of either daughter or father, in that that the father is fine to run about but the daughter isn't. I find this ironic in view of the film's title3. The gun the father is given is a MAJOR vector for infection when he passes it back again (they stand back from him though - like he is a leper, LOL!) 4. Dust masks are not effective barriers for either viruses or bacteriaSo it's a fail from the word go. An ignorant film, made by the ignorant for the ignorant.
Theo Robertson I just caught this on Channel 4 knowing absolutely nothing about it . This shouldn't be too surprising because CARRIERS is a film that must have been a nightmare to market and a big non prize to anyone who can work out why so many people on this page feel bitterly disappointed by it . Let's discuss the premise " A virus spreads through out the world and a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary only to discover the virus isn't the only thing to threaten them " Hey sounds a bit like a certain British horror film from about ten years ago directed by Danny Boyle . You can understand that it boils down to it a lot of people are expecting a horror movie which CARRIERS certainly isn't What we do get is a slow burning cerebral drama analyzing how far people will go to survive . It's a fact of life that he who saves themselves saves the entire human race and that human society is anti-Darwinian in nature . Strip away the veneer of civilization and unfortunately it's survival of the fittest which might seem the antithesis of morality but morality is entirely subjective . What might seem decent in one set of circumstances will be painfully impractical in another set of circumstances and the film explores these issues as best it can . Perhaps if some of the characters had been a little bit more practical then the film might have ended on a somewhat happier note As it stands this is an American film that has the classic British apocalyptic fiction of the 1950s about and I was often reminded of the original BBC drama from the 1970s SURVIVORS . Not a lot happens incident wise , those hoping for a horror film will be disappointed , those hoping for zombie horror will be doubly disappointed , those scared and depressed by post apocalypse fiction ( Hello Mr Moo ) will be too depressed to enjoy it but those interested in this genre will greatly respect CARRIERS for being an American movie that examines kinship and friendship in the face of adversity without resorting to hyperactive living dead and biker gangs
