Wuchak Released in 2004, "Club Dread" is a horror/comedy/spoof about a mad slasher who's systematically slaying the staff at Coconut Pete's Coconut Beach Resort, an island paradise whose clientèle consists mostly of hedonists and swingers. The story's a whodunit and I was trying to figure out who the killer was, but failed. This is a competently made slasher parody that's fairly amusing (and sometimes almost scary), but only sporadically laugh-out-loud funny. The actors are good, highlighted by Bill Paxton as Coconut Pete and Kevin Heffernan as a masseur, but the two main female cast members aren't that interesting, to me at least (Brittany Daniel and Jordan Ladd). However, there are some interesting peripheral women.Another reviewer effectively summed it up: "Club Dread is one of those in-between films. It wasn't bad, although it has bad parts. But it wasn't really good, although it has good parts." The film runs 104 minutes with a longer unrated cut; it was shot in El Tamarindo, Jalisco, Mexico.GRADE: C+
callanvass Clearly I am not one for Broken Lizard's stuff. There certainly seems to be audience for this stuff, but I am obviously not apart of this audience. From the rather dubious opening which was filled with sexual tension (not that I mind!) It was just the way it was done. I cannot believe Bill Paxton was apart of this crud. This is the guy who had the hilarious turn in True Lies; one of the best character actors of all time in my opinion, and he's relegated himself to this? Why Bill. Why?! The best thing about this movie is probably the gore. It has a decent amount of bloodshed, but one crucial error. IT LACKS LAUGHS! That is why you made this movie, right guys?Final Thoughts: This was terrible in my opinion. This is not worth the mediocrity you will go through. Give it a miss3/10
trashgang When you combine horror and comedy mostly things doesn't work out, because you make scary situations funny. Far most of the comedies coming out of the US didn't gave me a smile. Jay Chandrasekhar, the director did put in some comedy but not too much, it laid underneath, you had to search for it and by doing so the humor did work. He also knew his stuff in the horror genre by giving us some winks to classics. Just see how the killer comes up after being stabbed to death. Didn't that ring a bell, Michael Myers from Halloween, anybody? Or when the survivors are on a boat with happy music and suddenly one is attack like Jason did in Friday The 13th. On part of the horror it isn't that scary at all but it's just a flick you have to see with your friends and a six pack of beer. The acting was rather good for such a dumb flick. But some of the girls do know their stuff, Jordan Ladd (Penelope) went further on to act in Hostel part 2 and Cabin Fever and Death Proof. The best known face for me was Brittany Daniel (Jenny) who moved on to The Hamiltons and Skyline. Of course there's a bit of nudity in it, you get it straight away in the beginning of the flick. Funny was although that Jenny was going for a shower and reacted rather funny towards the viewers. I admit, even as it clocked in at 104 minutes I was attracted to the screen due the horror and comedy. Don't expect a flick like Scary Movie, it has more to show us. Some parts were on the gory side but overall it's watchable for teenagers too. Made in full bloom of the torture porn genre, that's why it flopped, being a slasher with some laughs. Gore 3/5 Nudity 2/5 Effects 3/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 2/5
SeptumSin Well this is a review for Club Dread an interesting movie by those zany guys that brought us "Super Troopers". This is a comedy/horror about a bunch of people going to an island resort to have a good time but little do they know a psycho killer is out to ruin their alcohol/drug soaked lives. There are parts of this movie that are very entertaining such as some of the twisted songs that are in the film but really this doesn't much feel like a comedy or a horror. I don't really feel much like laughing or screaming. The movie does have some small value and can be entertaining as a party movie. I'm not sure that I'd watch this movie unless you are a little intoxicated first. Well best wishes to your viewing.
