Reviews

stork1947 I wasted 2 hours of my life that I will NEVER get back after reading the reviews and then watching this vapid, dull, insipid movie. I kept waiting for something to happen. The script was rambling. There was NO theme. I can't believe that someone invested real money into making this pathetic movie. People just wander in and out of the scenes. There is no real character development. The characters have no depth. It is just a movie about old people breathing, walking and sleeping. Blythe Danner looks wonderful at her age but she needs a good hairdresser and stylist. Sam Elliott's place in her life had potential but, like everything else in this movie, the audience is left wanting. I'm still wondering why the pool guy returned later in the movie. The writers, producers and directors could have chosen a much better vehicle for Blythe Danner and Sam Elliott. If you have nothing else better to do with two hours of your life, you can watch this movie. But, if you have something more exciting to do, like sleeping, do that.
sunnyside36 This film was not funny. It's too slow moving, with too much air and malingering on weepy faces for that. All three laugh lines are in the trailer. The characters were not endearing. The dialogue was leaden. The acting was flat and hesitant, as if they were either going through their lines for the first time. At times is seemed like they might not even have had lines, and were just experimentally ad libbing their characters. Except, the dialogue they came up with was banal and ordinary to the point of embarrassment. The characters seemed awkward with each other, and in themselves. Mr. Cigarface, Bill, in addition to twiddling his prop cigar, projected character by having one eyebrow permanently, quizzically, cocked. With his walrus moustache, he came across a bit like chronically bemused Burt Reynolds, but worse. The cinematography at least made the film visually attractive at times.
zif ofoz There's really not much to be said about this little movie because it's just fine. It looks like a TV movie with adequate acting by each person and a simple story that will maintain your attention start to finish.Director: Brett Haley and Writers: Marc Basch, Brett Haley have created a story of the main character Carol Petersen (Blythe Danner) living a settled and routine life in her elder years. Along comes a young man, Lloyd, that sees something in her he needs and that she can provide at that point in his life. Then along comes another man, Bill, who is closer to her age and she sees in him something she needs at that point in her life. What makes this story interesting is that exactly what these needs are is never really addressed. It's left up to the viewer to decide. Her friends encourage her and they discourage her. Carol must make her own decision about her life while dealing with a youthful man, an elderly man, and her friends making suggestions on what she should do.This flick is easy to follow and just might leave you guessing what Carol will do at stories end.
santiagocosme So here is the thing, I am afraid this is the second review in succession I will make about a movie which content I cannot understand. Not that I did not get the conversations or the language, I just did not get what the intention of the movie was. So we have an old single lady who plays cards with a group of friends her age. She starts developing a friendship with the pool boy, she dates a guy who dies before it gets interesting, and she smokes a spliff with her retired girlfriends. So was the director trying to make a movie about love? If that's the case I saw very little of it. Was the movie about living a second life? If that's the case, then going on 2 dates with a guy and smoking pot is hardly considered wild partying in my books. Was the movie about friendship? Well, as I said the protagonist becomes friends with the pool boy. Maybe that's it! It's a movie about friendship. If that's the case, you will learn more about friendship having a drink with your mates than watching this utterly boring flick. Stay away or use it to get to sleep.
