morrison-dylan-fan Talking to a DVD seller about Dario Argento titles that we have seen,I mentioned that I had not seen his 2 Masters of horror eps,due to them not coming out on DVD in the UK. Happily catching me by surprise just before the October Horror Challenge kicked off on IMDb's Horror board, the seller sent me a box set of Masters of Horror as a free gift, which included the first Argento ep!,which led to me getting ready to meet Jenifer. The plot:Sitting in a car with his partner, cop Frank Spivey spots a women about to get killed.Killing the guy,Spivey finds out from his last breath that her name is Jenifer. Lifting her up,Spivey discovers that Jenifer has a disfigured face.Unable to withstand the siren call from her,Spivey decides to invite Jenifer into the family home, which leads to Jenifer eating up everything that Spivey offers her.View on the film:Following some of the original drawings in the comic book, directing auteur Dario Argento and cinematographer Attila Szalay do well at chewing on some of Argento's more wackier themes, engraved in the deformed appearance of Jenifer continuing a theme Argento has returned to since Phenomena of the main monster(s) having a deformity that the lead overlooks. Capturing Jenifer and Spivey in a savage lust,Argento uses Jenifer's disfigurements to give the erotic atmosphere an unsettling macabre edge, with the sex scenes having a wild wolves like howl, backed by Claudio Simonetti's creepy, child humming score.Making his writing debut after coming up with the idea of bringing a Bruce Jones comic to the screen, the screenplay by lead actor/writer Steven Weber laps up the cannibal horror, set off when Jenifer comes into contact with any juicy flesh (which allows Argento to joyfully go bonkers and have Jenifer chew up a cat!) Whilst taking every bite out of the gory delights on offer,Weber disappointingly fails to get under the skin of Jenifer or Spivey and makes their lust/blood lust keep the couple as wafer characters,as Spivey finds out the Jenifer is Jenny from the cannibal block.
sorinapha I've been super excited to start watching Masters of Horror, and started with this episode in particular because I had heard good things about it. Well...I was a bit disappointed. The acting was positively wooden. While I understand Carrie-Anne Fleming didn't have a lot to work with under the circumstances, her exaggerated movements came across as comical, but not funny enough to make this episode likable as an accidental comedy. The ultra-fake gore was not my favorite, that awkward thing at the beginning where Spivey raped his wife was absolutely unnecessary, even the consensual sex scenes were clunky and unattractive. Jenifer's theme music was also a bit annoying, but that's besides the point. All in all, I know the point of this series was to be kind of campy, that much is reflected in the choice of directors, but this was ridiculous. Will I keep watching the show? Sure. Do I have high hopes at this point for the other episodes? Not exactly.
rae315 So, it has been several hours since I saw this movie, and I still have the horrific images of Jenifer in my mind. I can't believe what a good job they did on Carrie Ann's face. In the beginning, I thought that they would try to hide her face, or just show peeks from underneath her hair, but all of the full frontal shots of her disfigured face were very disturbing; most haunting, in my opinion, were her teeth, tongue, and dripping saliva. I don't really know how to rate this movie, because I found parts of the plot to be very hard to believe. When Steven Weber found her with the cat, and then with the child from next door, I found it very strange that he wouldn't return her to the psych hospital. However, this is the concept of the movie...that she has some strange power over men, mostly sexually, that makes them ruin their entire lives, and die, for her. I think that she must be some sort of demon/devil creature which is conveniently housed inside of a freakishly attractive body....with a "butter face", to say the least. When the camera focuses on her eyes, I think this backs up the idea that she is not just a psychopath, but a truly evil being. Her big, cold black eyes seem otherworldly. To sum this movie up, I don't know if I will be able to sleep tonight...not so much out of horror from the plot/events in the movie, but from the special effects makeup job done on the Jenifer character. This movie is not for people with weak stomachs!!
sb88 When watching "Jenifer" the viewer is soon confronted with the same conflicts as the main character. How, exactly do you deal with a girl that has an amazing body but just happens to have a disfigured face and an insatiable appetite? There's plenty of gore and nudity here to satisfy whatever need for that there may be, but that's just the icing on the cake. We get a compelling story and two very interesting characters: the completely innocent and yet deadly Jenifer and the man whose attraction to her can overcome her violent flaws. Is some of it predictable? Sure, but in this case I don't find it to be a bad thing. Sometimes the route that you expect is simply the best way to go.And for horror fans, you certainly can't go wrong with this solid entry from the Masters of Horror series.
