Sam Panico If you ever wanted to watch a movie where Bill Goldberg hits Chris Kattan with the same sidekick that ended Bret Hart's career, good news. I have found the movie for you.Yep, the Mason family - including James Caan, Rebecca Gayhart, Fran Drescher and Kattan - are all fighting during Christmas dinner, but Santa arrives in time to kill them all. And that's just the start.Santa is really Satan's son - the son of a virgin birth like Jesus - who used December 25th as the "Day of Slaying" until an angel defeated him in a curling match and he was forced to deliver gifts for 1,000 years. Now, it's 2005 and Santa is ready to get some revenge. This film was directed by David Steiman, who was a production assistant for Brett Ratner. It's a slick looking film, one that ended up way better than I thought it would be.It has some interesting picks as stars, like SCTV's Dave Thomas playing a perverted pastor and Robert Culp playing the hero's grandfather (who ends up being the curling playing angel who defeated Satan's son). Plus, you know, Bill Goldberg as Santa, which gives him the chance to use his "Who's next?" catchphrase after the credits. There are much better Santa as killer movies you can watch this holiday season. And we've covered so many of them over the last few days. But if you want to be a completist - and if you're a wrestling fan and want to see Vince Russo die in a strip club massacre - then go ahead and watch this.
gwnightscream This 2005 horror comedy stars Bill Goldberg, Douglas Smith, Emilie de Ravin and Robert Culp. Goldberg (WWE) headlines as a buff, evil version of Santa Claus who terrorizes small town, Hell Township on Christmas after a 1000 years. It's up to teen, Nicholas (Smith), his crackpot grandfather (Culp) and Mary (de Ravin), Nicholas' girlfriend to stop him. Dave Thomas (Rat Race), James Caan (Elf), Saul Rubinek (Unforgiven) and Fran Drescher (The Nanny) also make brief appearances. This is an amusing b-movie that pays tribute and pokes fun of holiday horror/slasher flicks. Goldberg's creepy and humorous performance makes the film worthwhile.
Michael_Elliott Santa's Slay (2005) ** 1/2 (out of 4) Turns out Santa was actually the son of Satan who lost a bet to an angel that forced him to be "good" for a thousand years. Time is up so Santa (Bill Goldberg) goes back to being bad by killing as many people as he can but it's up to a loser (Douglas Smith), his girlfriend (Emile de Ravin) and his wacky grandfather (Robert Culp) to try and save the day. If you're looking for high art then you're not going to find it here but if you're looking for a black comedy that isn't afraid to offend then this one here is just for you. When you see Bill Goldberg on a cover dressed as Santa then you're probably expecting something very stupid and bad but it turned out that this is a rather clever little movie that works well if you know what you're getting into. This movie isn't trying to be anything ground breaking but instead it just wants to make you laugh. The film opens up with a hilarious spoof of happy families as James Caan and Fran Drescher play the parents to some ungrateful kids (Chris Kattan, Rebecca Gayheart) and Santa soon shows up to teach them a lesson. Other victims including a cussing old lady, a Jewish store owner and we even get some Amish folks who show up. When people think of killer Santa movies they usually think of SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT. Those who found that movie to be too mean spirited will find the complete opposite here because the movie pokes fun at a lot of people and subjects but it's done in good fun. One of the best moments happen when a preacher asks his people for dollar bills and then after the service he goes to a strip club where of course Santa shows up. I was really surprised to see how many known faces are on hand here in small roles. It was fun seeing Caan and Drescher in the opening bit and Robert Culp is always entertaining. Saul Rubinek and Dave Thomas are on hand as well. de Raven is very good in her role as the girlfriend and helps keep the film moving. Goldberg gets to show some of his famous wrestling moves and he handles the part quite nicely. He's certainly not worthy of an Oscar but he looks just right for a crazy Santa. There's some pretty good gore scattered throughout as well. SANTA'S SLAY isn't the greatest movie ever made but it's a pretty good little gem that manages to make you laugh and it's certainly something different from your typical Christmas flick.
gavynhelfyre I unabashedly love this film. It is the best kind of awful. The kind that is done with such love of cheese and camp that you can't help but think that everything is exactly as it should be.It has become a holiday tradition with with my fiancée and I. It's so outlandish and over the top that it helps us forget the stress of the holidays and just sit back and laugh. If you want a good Christmas movie. This isn't for you.If you want a good horror movie. This is also not for you.If you want something to make you laugh at absurdity during the holidays and love cheese and camp... this is definitely for you.
