George Wright Still Mine is an appealing film with great heart that is highlighted by a wonderful performance by James Cromwell as an ageing family man who is caught up in a battle with the local bureaucracy when he tries to build a new house for himself and his wife. Filmed in the New Brunswick town of St. Martin's as well as locations in Ontario, I found the characters of the man and his wife, Irene, played superbly by Genevieve Bujold, to be honest and even inspirational. Cromwell's character, Craig Morrison, was totally devoted to his wife and in building a new house for use in their advancing years, he took on a job few men of 87 would even consider. In doing so, he found his dedication to quality questioned by the local authorities who wanted lumber, for example, stamped to signify proper building codes. The fact that his own lumber surpassed the codes in many cases did not meet the letter of the law. Cromwell found himself under a great strain trying to deal with his wife's dementia and the expectations of his family, while battling the authorities. The two leading characters had great affection for one another and it was very moving to witness the attraction they felt and the love they shared. The supporting acting was generally good with family friends, Margaret and Chester, middle-aged children, Ruth and John, and the attorney, Gary, who didn't bill his client and in return, was granted a parcel of land by the generous farmer. Films about older couples seem to be trending upward in recent years; however, it is refreshing to see how elders perceive their lives and cope with a world that often treats them as an annoyance.
Speedysue2003 I have no words to really express how much this movie truly affected my emotions. Just a big WOW. Well written and well acted. Movies based on true stories are the best, especially when they deal with real situations and don't need extra subplots. Tom Cromwell deserves a big round of applause! He is excellent. Have always liked him. This is a movie that every compassionate human being should see. Anyone can relate to the love between husband and wife, family and friends. And yes, wish we could have more Craig Morrisons in this world. But alas, money and bureaucracy are more alluring to the Now generation. Integrity is a word seldom used or adhered to in our world society. So sad. It is a great word and let's you sleep without remorse at night. This is a very good movie. Have the tissue handy but remember that families are going through these very real issues every second of the day all across the world, so don't dismiss this movie as a geezer movie or a chick film. As I said before, it is for every compassionate human being strong enough to have integrity and remember what the word means.
Robert Ponce This movie is a refreshing detour from what's put out there now-a-days. They didn't have to inject vulgarity, violence (physical), suggestive nudity, gross blood shed and other popular attractions. On account of today's popular standards, of fast action, violence and sex (as frequently as they please), this movie does not fit that bill. But any caring person will understand and feel the angst, frustrations, disappointments but above all will feel the LOVE shown by the main characters. The human empathy & sensitivity Craig feels towards his wife Irene is masterfully portrayed by James Cromwell, a character actor fully & competently equipped for "Craig's" part. Geneviève Bujold's portrayal of Irene is just as believable and touching- true to the effects of aging. I was glued to the screen the whole time. See it!
Mick Knutson First off, I am saddened that I did not know about this film earlier. Second, I am saddened that it took a real-life experience to create this idea, but I feel this is not a creative stretch to write this story.James's performance is very painful, knowing the real-life experience of someone who has lost their soul-mate. I commend him on understanding that tie. I personally feel this must have been a difficult role to portray, and he executed that role brilliantly.Geneviève has an equally difficult role in the film. I do feel there where some characteristics missing, such as a more defined moment of loosing track of the conversation, as it would manifest itself in a more confused state. I think these moments where glazed over a bit, but maybe that was for cinematic reasons, but I think there could have been more climax, to each of the specific events, and I would have been more aware of the shards of turmoil that was building in the household.All-in-all, this is NOT a light-hearted movie. But, this is a movie that creates a great summary of aging family issues that we are all susceptible to facing.I give this a TWO THUMBS UP!!!
