Davis P The Back up Plan is a pretty run of the mill, generic romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez. It's not all bad, don't get me wrong, it's just not like amazing or incredible. Let me just say from the get go, Melissa McCarthy was by far the best and funniest part of this entire film! Whenever she came on screen I busted out laughing, especially the birth scene. That scene was absolutely hilarious! The romance and chemistry between the two main lead characters was good, the intimate scenes between them were well done, and the scene previous to the sex scene where she orgasms without sex because of hormones is hilarious lol. I thought that was kinda clever. The problems come in when the film reaches about mid way through, it does drag a bit. The movie kind of slows down and gets a little boring. That's the movie's biggest flaw by far. And I would say the movie's biggest success is, like I somewhat mentioned earlier, Melissa McCarthy, she freaking slays in this movie. 6/10.
SnoopyStyle Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) is a successful single NYC gal and has given up finding the perfect man. She goes to have artificial insemination. Her friend harried mom Mona (Michaela Watkins) warns against it. Clive (Eric Christian Olsen) refuses to contribute. After insemination, she fights Stan (Alex O'Loughlin) for a cab. Carol (Melissa McCarthy) leads the single mom support group. She runs into Stan who is selling cheese at the farmer's market. Despite being pursued by muffin girl Olivia (Danneel Harris), Stan falls for Zoe. After being told about her pregnancy, Stan befriends a dad (Anthony Anderson) at the playground.Lopez and O'Loughlin have limited chemistry and the story doesn't help. Lopez tries hard but she has to keep asking if he's leaving. It doesn't allow for the chemistry to build. There are some good comedic talents here. None of that can save this badly conceived movie.
mikes-movie-review-onlin I honestly don't know where to begin. This movie had some promise in the storyline, but somehow the actors and the scriptwriters seem to have butchered it into this mess of a film. The movie isn't actually very funny, or very romantic. The Back-Up Plan is about Zoe (Jennifer Lopez), a New Yorker who gets artificially inseminated after years of failed relationships. Just after her meeting at the doctor's office she meets a handsome and mysterious man named Stan (Alex O'Loughlin). Of course she does get pregnant, and of course she meets Stan again. He sells goat cheese and makes it at his own farm. They fall in love and decide to raise the baby together. The storyline is very shaky and I think the only reason everyone stayed in the theater was that they wanted to finish their popcorn. To keep the film going the writers use two techniques: 1) Have the main characters break up and make up like three times. 2) Include unnecessary scenes such as ten minutes of feminists helping a woman give birth. The script itself is bad and the dialogue doesn't seem natural. The acting is slightly better, but only slightly. Jennifer Lopez is as attractive as always, and this is perhaps her best acting yet, but even her best still isn't enough to make a good movie. Alex O'Loughlin (Whiteout) is relatively unknown, and I think I know why. The girls I saw this film with commented that he had a 'hot body', this is the sole reason he ever got an acting job in the first place. This man can not act. His emotions were flat and his dialogue was just boring throughout the entire film.Alan Poul is a relatively new director, meaning that he hasn't many movies yet. His style is fine, but he still deserves some of the blame for this movie's failure to entertain. For example, the extended birth scene I talked about earlier. It's not even Jennifer Lopez giving birth, and the whole scene is weird and pretty stupid. Overall, The Back-Up Plan is not a good movie and I would personally not recommend it, but hey, somebody out there might like it.
girllovesmovies27 While this is not my favorite JLo movie, it is still worth the watch. Alex is absolutely adorable in this, it's truly nice to see him in a rom-com. He's been on my watchlist since his short-lived Moonlight. The Back-up Plan storyline is silly, but it's easy to go with it. Surely there are women that can relate to JLo's character's predicament! It is a bit far-fetched (ok, more than just a bit) that a man you just met and dated a bit would stick by you if he had just found out you hit the sperm bank and are pregnant, but like I said- the story is silly. The movie, at times, felt a bit long, but then again, you are following along with her pregnancy. I found her best friend to be extremely obnoxious, but I get it, she had to have a sidekick of sorts. I was surprised to see Eric Christian Olsen in this film, but not surprised that he was funny. More rom-coms for Alex and Eric both please!
