briannjs Seriously, how many times do the couple get robbed or have people just swoop into their house? and having to be kicked ass over and over again? and they dont do anything about the security of the house? any simple house alarm system? no wonder why they lived in such a poor state before the teapot their stupidity makes me too frustrated to watch
Michael Ledo John (Michael Angarano) works selling extended warranties over the phone. His boss complains that he needs to smile. His wife Alice (Juno Temple) is unemployed in spite of her $40,000 bachelors degree in art history. They live in a Laurel Springs, a small Indiana town. Alice steals a brass teapot from an antiques store. If someone is in pain, either mental or physical, the teapot dispense money according to the depth of the pain. The money making pot becomes addictive and they discover they need to do deeper hurts to make the same money. The teapot is a watered down version of "The Monkey's Raw" but still contains elements of dark comedy. John and Alice are basically good people, but when they dig a grave for a future victim, they start to examine their addiction. Personally I would have dumped the Pinto.Guide: F-word. Sex? No nudity.
TxMike I found this movie on Netflix streaming. The premise concerns a young 20-something couple trying hard to use their college education towards a conventional existence in Indiana (filmed in New York). He is a phone salesman trying to get people to buy extended warranties. She is shopping around for a job. But they are barely making ends meet. The young wife is Juno Temple as Alice and the young husband is Michael Angarano John. One day they are driving in a rural area and get hit by a truck that didn't stop at an intersection. There also was a dilapidated antique shop. They go in and on impulse Alice sees and steals a nicely decorated brass pot.Thinking it was only an attractive pot, one day while curling her hair she burns herself and yelps, then finds that the brass pot generated some money, several $20 bills. A light went off in her head, she purposely hurts herself again and more money. Then, the greater the hurt the greater the amount of money. So what we have here is a seemingly unlimited source of money for two young people who are pretty much broke. This spirals into a number of other situations as they try to figure out how to make a million dollars. But some research shows that the brass pot and its magic may be a terror in the long run.Somewhat different theme from most modern movies, I enjoyed it.
William Evans (Evanz111) How far would a person go to earn easy money? The idea of being able to earn money from pain is not only a masochist's wet dream, but it provides the potential for a film with a lot of moral complexity and moral questioning. I was fine with the director trying to get a few laughs from it, but I don't quite understand why they didn't further explore the darker side of this concept, as it would have really set this film apart from the rest. There was one point near the end of the film that made me cry, as it showed the vulnerability of humans and how easily they can be corrupted, but even that quickly subsided and turned out to be a red herring, the film continuing down its cliché and comedic path instead.I'd love to see a different director attempt this film again, but take it more seriously. I honestly think it has potential. The film as it currently exists is worth a watch, but pretty forgettable and you won't be thinking much about it afterwards.
