hale1d Exceeding shallow, contrived leftest parody of the US war on terror. Very predictable plot with the actors just moving through the endless 106 minutes of this with no life or feeling. No real plot or story ark. Just constant easy, shallow jabs at the US armed forces and the US actions in the mid-east. Typical jump-on-the-bandwagon, hate America stuff that some in Hollywood think is great social commentary. In short - not funny - not engaging - not well acted - really not well written. As I stated in my summary... Simply crap.
andymcc_80 I bought this film on DVD mainly because John Cusack was in it and I'll normally give anything he's in at least one viewing, after watching it I think it deserves more than it's current 5.8 rating on IMDb, I've watched it 3 times since buying it and always enjoy it. The film balances satire and action well and never seems to drag. Cusack is perfect for the role as the traveling hit-man, in fact all the actors chosen(even Duff) play their parts well, Kingsley and Joan Cusack stand out in their roles too. Why this film hasn't been seen by more people I don't know, especially when you compare it to most of the recent 'hit' films. If you want an easy to watch(but clever) satire/comedy with good action scenes you could do far worse then pick up a copy of War Inc.
KillFox "The first war to be 100% outsourced." Dan Ackroyd's line says it all. This is a hard to describe film; comedy, satire, action, screwball. It reminded once or twice of Dr. Strangelove, especially so in the scenes featuring Ben Kingsley (who did a remarkable job I think). I had no particular expectations of this film, though I am a big John Cusack fan, so I just let the movie wash over me. And as a result I was quite entertained. The political satire is painfully accurate and quite damning of the US military-business complex. The sub-plots were somewhat predictable but the final interweaving of story lines made them all worthwhile. I can understand why this film was not terribly popular in the US, but for the rest of the world, it is a timely tale.
JoeytheBrit This really didn't work at all for me. I like John Cusack, he's a talented actor - but his choice of film roles is sometimes questionable. He co-produced this one and also had a hand in the writing, so I guess he's got to take his share of the blame for turning what could have been a sharp satire into a turgid, vaguely confusing drama.Cusack plays Brand Hauser, a hit-man of a future in which corporations are hired by nations to fight their wars for them. Thus, we see tanks trundling into battle with posters for Golden Palace Casino pasted to their sides. Sadly, that's about as cutting as the satire gets, and as the story unfolds, spending way too much time focusing on the non-romance of Hauser and journalist Marisa Tomei, the number of missed opportunities keeps mounting until they reach an embarrassingly high quotient. The film has a few moments where it briefly comes to life, but they're few and far between. Cusack gives a typically solid performance, while big sister Joan steals all her scenes in a calculatedly over-the-top performance.
