benson3436 Hugely underrated, dark comedy movie about a father who deals with his sons accidental death. I have seen it a couple times since it has came out and I will probably see it a couple more times before I die. Robin Williams was always a joy to see or hear in any movie and I appreciate every role he portrayed, even if it was a corny role like Cadillac Man. Lol.
NateWatchesCoolMovies Worlds Greatest Dad is a true curiosity, a film I had to sit back and really think about right after I had watched it. It has such a strange arc, and wasn't the pithy dark comedy I was expecting from the trailers. I mean, it is a pithy dark comedy, just not in the way you'd think at all. I still can't even figure out if I liked the thing, but it wouldn't leave my head for a while after, so it certainly has a kick to deliver, one that's decidedly below the belt. Williams is Lance, a high school English teacher with traces of old world in his methods. He prefers to instruct his students in poetry, which makes him a bit unpopular, sadly. He also has an absolute snot nosed, shitthead fvckwit douchebag of a son, played by Spy Kid's own Daryl Sabara. Think my description of him is too harsh? Nah, son. This kid is a royal assshole of the highest degree, and one wonders what Lance did in a previous life to deserve such evil spawn. He's a mean, spiteful, discouraging, porn addicted little pissss stain, and ironically enough, it's the spank material that results in his untimely death. I won't say exactly how it happens, but for those who know what I'm talking about, he and David Carradine share an embarrassing fate. What's curious is Lance's reaction upon discovering the body: the kid treated him with nothing but disdain and disregard for years, but he's still devastated. A father's love, I suppose. He then writes a passionate suicide note and passes it off as his son's, to hide the perverse truth. Everyone at the school, in town, even the local newspaper goes ballistic and praises the deceased boy's work. Suddenly he's a local hero, a beacon of hope for troubled youth everywhere, and a martyr to spur copies in flying off the shelves. There's the joke, though. He was pretty much the worst person ever in the world, and now the writing Lance worked so hard on is being not only credited to, but hailed as that of his shitty dead kid. Even in death, one final jab of abuse bites back. Like I said, a very odd turn of events, and definitely like no other dark comedy, or other film, for that matter. When you consider this is a script by irreverent comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, who also directed, it's easier to understand and appreciate the twisted nature of the story, and the places it goes. Williams is inspired, turning Lance from a sulky mess to a hero behind the curtain, finding his own life in Sabara's demise, as wrong as that sounds. I guarantee you've never seen a film like this, and we probably will never get another just like it.
brandonleewainscott So, I thought this was doing to be a goofy comedy similar to American Pie stuff--nonsense in other words. Well, it had American Pie content with the masturbation. But then it got more serious, and the son killing himself accidentally while masturbating in a faux hanging style . It is funny like that show with all those crazy ways people died, but it quickly becomes serious and sad. And so the whole film you are laughing one moment and in tears the next. At first I said 7/10 movie about a fourth of the way in. But then as it went on, it had a lot of depth. Kyle was a troubled young man who was very insecure, and so tried to cope with it by insulting and acting like a douchebag. You could see he was suffering. The actor did a really good job with the character. The part where Robin Williams' character first catches him masturbating in his strange way is well played out by the actor. Kyle's expression and words are so real. He plays it so realistic to a son being found by his dad masturbating, and Robin Williams likewise. And Kyle is played well until his death. Then Kyle dies, and Robin Williams holding his body in his arms quickly turns anything funny about the scene not funny. Tears come. And it is like this the whole movie. The depth comes in how, when they read "Kyle's" "suicide note" andjournal, they all suddenly like Kyle. It's not a, "Hey, we were jerks", but they act like Kyle was their friend. It shows how shallow people can be. Robin Williams plays the grieving father part so well. And they story and characters are very intelligent, too. The Kyle character is very real. What is called a douchebag, a guy who acts as if he is some sort of cool guy and everyone else is a loser because he is some insecure. And his friend with the drunk mother who represents the son that Kyle's father wished he had. Well, laughs and tears. Great movie.
rampantaardvark Where were the people who should, or at least could, have been looking out for Robin Williams? True, this inept waddle was made in 2009, years before William's suicide, and so it may be a stretch to ask this question but honestly, this is one of the most unskilled lumpy pieces of nothing ever foisted on the public. The far greater insult is to Robin Williams, possibly the most electrically brilliant comedian of all time. How lost must he have been, how blunted his aim and good judgment to have agreed to partake in this amateur production. Who the hell is this Bobcat Goldthwaite anyway?? What a depressing little cobbled-together thing, this film? What a bunch of sad sacks (ah yes, but that's the point, amongst others, fella). Dreary performances and infinitely worse, watching Williams and speculating that performing this drudge probably adding to the stockpile of despair, self-loathing and hopelessness which led to his tragic end. On all levels this film is inept, amateur, uninteresting and devoid of hope.
