Local entrepreneur Ripley Holden, a brash, charismatic family man, holds a lavish opening for his new showpiece arcade in his beloved home town of Blackpool. However, his fortunes take a turn for the worse when he discovers the dead body of a young man on the premises. Keen to get the case cleared up, Ripley co-operates with the investigating police officer, DI Peter Carlisle. But Carlisle takes a dislike to Ripley, which makes him all the more determined to prove the businessman is the culprit. Family problems add to Ripley's headache; his young son, Danny, is seemingly hiding something and his 20-year-old daughter, Shyanne, brings home an unsuitable new boyfriend - a man Ripley was at school with. Ripley instructs Shyanne's partner to end the relationship. Shyanne is left heartbroken. Meanwhile, Carlisle takes a shine to Natalie, Ripley's wife.

EP2 Episode 2 Nov 18, 2004

The murder investigation begins to make Ripley's life very difficult. The murder victim is identified as a young man who'd been out on his stag night. The investigation starts to threaten Ripley's business when Carlisle temporarily closes down the arcade for forensics. DI Carlisle calls Ripley's son, Danny, in for questioning; he's convinced that Danny knows more about the inquiry than he is letting on. Carlisle suspects he might be covering for his father. When a huge tax bill surfaces and puts pressure on Ripley's finances, his friends Terry, Jim and Adrian, who have invested in the arcade, start to get twitchy. Meanwhile, Natalie agrees to go on a date with Carlisle – unaware that he is investigating the murder. And Shyanne's love life takes a turn for the better when she's reunited with Steve, who'd earlier been warned to stay away from her by Ripley.

EP3 Episode 3 Nov 25, 2004

Forensic evidence links Ripley ever more closely to the murder, and his application for planning permission is rejected. It seems Lady Luck has turned against him and his world is falling apart. Natalie discovers that Carlisle is a police officer, and that he has been investigating her family. She is devastated; the little time they've spent together has made her feel more alive than she has felt in years. Shyanne's boyfriend, Steve, is badly beaten up. She's convinced that her father is behind the attack, but he denies any involvement. Danny starts to crack under pressure, and ends up getting himself into even more trouble. He's set up in a drugs bust, but Carlisle just gives him a ticking off. What Carlisle really wants is evidence that Ripley committed the murder. Danny, though, shocks him by turning up to the police station and confessing to the murder himself.

EP4 Episode 4 Dec 02, 2004

Carlisle doesn't believe Danny's confession to the murder. He's convinced that Danny is covering up for his father, Ripley. Natalie confronts Carlisle and warns him to stay away from her, and her family. Heartbroken, Carlisle sets out with a renewed determination to nail Ripley, his love rival. Ripley visits Steve in hospital and offers him a large sum of money to leave Shyanne alone. Steve takes the money but uses his windfall to stretch Ripley's patience by spending it on Shyanne. With his showpiece arcade sinking deeper into trouble, Ripley is forced to drop everything and take drastic measures when Danny, traumatised by recent events, reaches breaking-point. He finds Danny lying on a train track, in a suicide bid similar to the one Ripley himself tried as a teenager. Danny admits that he moved the murdered body from Ripley's flats into the casino. Ripley goes to Carlisle and claims he was the one who moved the body...

EP5 Episode 5 Dec 09, 2004

Natalie provides Ripley with a watertight alibi for the night of the murder. Carlisle knows she's lying, but there's nothing he can do about it. Meanwhile, Ripley's business is falling down around his ears. Marr, Ripley's friend and trusted financial advisor, reveals his true colours with a mean trick he's had up his sleeves. Ripley isn't prepared to go down easily, but events spiral even further out of control as he struggles to hang on to what little he has left. Ripley's friend Terry also confesses that he's been informing the police about Ripley's activities on the night of the murder. Carlisle temporarily succeeds in winning back Natalie, but she gets cold feet once again and goes to his hotel to end the affair. Carlisle claims that he never loved her, he just wanted to get to Ripley. Meanwhile, Ripley susses that Carlisle and Natalie have been having an affair...

kenj-3 I did not expect this to be anywhere as good as it turned out to be. I mean, who wants to see a murder mystery where the main characters break out into song every 30 minutes or so? Yes, they actually do sing in their own voices over recordings you will recognize. The songs are a perfect fit to the story, moving it along and providing a lot of context. My personal favorite was the head to head between David Morrissey and David Tennant, both singing "These Boots Are Made For Walking." Sarah Parish has always been a personal favorite, starting with "Cutting It" and doing a killer job as a lawyer in the short lived series "Trust". David Morrissey did a fantastic job. You'd swear he is a total sleaze in the beginning of the series, but by the end, your opinion will probably change. Likewise, David Tennant (the new Dr Who) seems to be the perfect cop, but is he really? PS - If you saw this on BBC America, you missed about 10 minutes out of every episode. Several songs were cut, as were a lot of key scenes that made the story much easier to follow, and also developed some of the the characters much further. Especially Hallworth, the character played by David Bradley who was protesting the conversion of the arcade into a casino.Do yourself a favor - get a multi-region DVD player, and order the DVD from the UK.
bombelliott Very, very good. Forget the Dennis Potter comparisons as this is very different. Hard to believe when people suddenly start singing and dancing, but "Blackpool" feels very real to me. Potter is art, this is entertainment. No-one in this show is perfect and that just makes it better (and certainly more surprising). Ripley Holden is a violent bully who treats his wife like dirt BUT he is incredibly funny. DI Carlisle starts off as the typical scruffy copper who will eventually get his man but he starts to compromise more and more. And Natalie is the perfect wife, mother and charity worker who has an affair. I love 'Blackpool' for it's music, humour, and its complex relationships. The only flaw seems to be that Danny is shown as a suicidal drug dealer who almost beats his future brother-in-law to death (with a brick!) and is the murderer BUT inherits the arcade and goes unpunished. But perhaps that is the point. Like father, like son.
evolvedsky I was flicking through the channels on TV slightly bored had not a lot to do until i came across a program that was just starting. I didn't know what it was about but it was called Blackpool. It seemed pretty good nothing more than you normal melodrama and about five minutes in they burst into You Can Get It If You Really Want (Jimmy Cliff) and to my amazement i found it hugely captivating. The musical choruses are great through out the series ranging from Gabrielle to The Clash i think that you don't have to be into musicals to appreciate the bursts of songs as they almost fall into a category of music video within the program having there own dance routines even little fantasies they help a great deal to build the plot.Apart from the music the program takes very sinister turns that make very significant changes to the plot throughout and as the truth gradually seeps out you will begin to see darker secrets and darker changes in the characters Which after every episode had me eager for more. From watching the casino owner Ripley opening his brand new casino to have his whole world fall apart in 6 episodes will bring out many emotions but inevitably entertain you throughout. The cast is brilliant The chemistry between David Morrisey (Ripley Holden) and David Tennant (D.I. Carlisle) they have a great passion to hate each other although will stop at nothing to get one over on the other one. Tennant however falls in love with Sarah parish (natalie Holden) and the romance between them is great along with the music you can really feel a great passion between them which on screen is captured so well the rest of the cast really pull the whole thing together and ensure a great performance on the whole. This program is well worth a watch to anyone who enjoys being entertained. The blend of music great characters and a superb and captivating story all set on the back drop of the sunny seaside resort of Blackpool will have you wanting more. This program gets my vote i hope it gets yours.
hesketh27 Blackpool is an unusual drama (with touches of comedy) which tells the story of an amusement arcade owner who finds himself and his family at the centre of a murder investigation when a body is found in his arcade. From time to time the actors burst into song (a la Singing Detective) & are transported into fantasy sequences which work quite well as an integral part of the plot. The actors' faces are well known to UK TV audiences from their regular appearances in supporting roles in other TV vehicles. As in all BBC productions, the performances are uniformly good. The real star of the show however is Blackpool itself. The wonderfully seedy holiday resort is well used as the backdrop and well known places/landmarks appear in most scenes. An enjoyable serial. (The soundtrack's pretty good too!)
