"The Event" just isn't worth watching. The general concept is good although not original. The acting is OK. The general outline of the story works for me at least. Sadly the writing must be among the worst ever on prime time TV.An OK story line is driven forward only by torture, violence, blackmail and lies. There is also a love story not creating a single spark but endless pathetic scenes. Finally there are pointless switches back and forth in time making things less clear and directly boring with their predictability.Originality is totally lacking. Intelligence is not present. There is no consistency in abilities given to the respective characters. Getting through 22 episodes without a single original twist is almost an achievement by the writers. The first few episodes really are a nightmare. Then the show at least listened to relentless criticism and got rid of the worthless time jumps. Middle episodes are therefore somewhat better. However after giving a ray of hope "The event"'s first season ends on another low. The story lines ended in season 1 are pathetic in predictability and execution. And as "The event" got cancelled after season 1 we will never know how the open story lines end. That's just as well.

I watched this through for the first time now in 2012, and was thoroughly disappointed to learn there would be no more to follow.I enjoyed it immensely - a 24esque political terrorism thriller, but with the twist that here the terrorists are aliens, and their motivations are conflicted - we move from being sympathetic to their plight, to being completely horrified by them and cheering on those who wish to incarcerate/exterminate them. The way it builds, drawing an ordinary person into playing a pivotal role in such an incredible plot is done thoughtfully and believably. Unlike other sci-fi shows, the main focus is on the pace of the action, the unfolding of the complex, twisty-turny plot, and personalities of the main protagonists: the flashy, gimmicky effects used in other shows to hide the limited strength of the plot are missing here.Where alien technology is shown, it is done so carefully, and shows that it has very real limits, but still manages to terrify with the potential outcomes.I wish there was more to come - I want to know more about what happened in the past, and what will happen in the future, and the roles of the guardians, etc.The only thing that made me cringe was at the last minute when a planet was drawn to become Earth's neighbour. Everyone felt a bit of a shaky ground and windows. However, if an object so massive was drawn so close to the Earth, that would be a global destruction event in itself - the new gravitational effect against the earth would cause tidal waves, earthquakes, etc. as water and molten lava were attracted towards it, but sine it also wasn't spinning and had no apparent kinetic energy, it's motion once it got there would be difficult to predict - would it crash into the earth, the moon, as it took up a new orbit of its own, or with no apparent existing forces acting upon it, would it just start on a straight trajectory for the sun, messing up the orbit of the moon and the earth as it did so (still pulling on them with its own gravity). Hmmm. Anyway....That colossal guff ignored, I'd still love to see more of it. I don't understand how shows with such a brilliant story, well-portrayed, and well-liked, are dumped in favour of crap viewing. So unfortunate. Still, if you haven't already seen this, go get it on DVD and you won't be disappointed.

I was curious about this show but had heard it did poorly in the ratings, and after viewing the pilot, I can see why. While watching it I was bored, intrigued, and annoyed at varying times. Intrigued because the writers are clearly bating me to be curious, bored, because not that much really happens, and annoyed because they jump back and forth from present, 8 months ago, and...a few weeks ago, or something like that, and they also jump around to about 5 different characters perspective, but not telling you how any of these people are related or how their paths crossed. Talk about a sure way to not get you engaged. I can presume that obviously these characters are all going to be connected in some way...but, poor execution, not to mention, very disorienting and almost dizzying when your mind has to snap back and forth to keep up with the times and locations...with zero payoff.I think it's clear that NBC recognized the huge hit of Lost on ABC and wanted their own little sci-fi franchise and so they used Lost's jumping around from the present to the past and then to the future as the foundation of their show, thinking that's what the audience likes and wants. What the producers at NBC failed to recognize is that Lost was an extremely well written show, that didn't leave you dizzy when they jumped around and you knew what was happening from moment one and there was always answers to every question and payoff. My intrigue wants me to watch further but so far I hate this show. It went from dislike 30 minutes in, to hate after about 45 minutes of trying to keep up with a very poorly written execution. I am intrigued by what the big secret of this show is, but yet very turned off by how sloppy the writing is and...I honestly feel like either they hired a bunch of writers to quickly write their own version of Lost or some poorly constructed script was greenlit only because after the success of Lost producers thought a show set in the past and the present would be an automatic hit.Really, the only thing I like about this show, so far, is the house the girl lives in.Terrible.
