GL84 Following his grandfather's death, a teen's discovery of hidden canisters containing a secret chemical causes a horde of flesh-eating zombies at their school's Halloween rave and forces them to stop the bloodthirsty creatures. There's a lot to like with this one as its quite fun. Among its better elements is the fact of this one going with a pronounced sense of fun here with detailing the way the events plays play out in here. From the start with the discovery of the canisters and how it leads to the revelation into the true contents inside, this brings about what could've been fun in the synthesized drugs leading to the zombie outbreak on the school campus. There's some good times to be had from the group going after the zombies in the dorms or out on the football field as the earlier scenes featuring the drugs being distributed which allow those fun action scenes to get paid off quite nicely. These here manage to set-up the craziest part of the film in its' finale as this gets way from the school encounters into the titular rave which really offers up a lot to like with the crowd dancing away in costumes providing a perfect backdrop to hide the victims getting ripped apart, the frantic panicking of the crowd provides a ton of great action and there's tons of exciting action here in this one doling out the big attack where swarm is quipped out by an attack helicopter that's really spectacular. As well, there's some genuinely creepy scenes involving their attempted escape from a horde of zombies in a black-lit room illuminated only by the gunshots in the room that's balanced out by the comedy of the bumbling agents for a rather complete scene here. Add in fantastic zombie make-up for the creatures and rather impressive kills and gore that all gives this one a lot of good points against the few small flaws here. The main one here is the rather convoluted way this one goes about getting the virus and drugs across the campus. The way it works before in getting the capsule and the ever-increasing swarm of zombies into the film's action was rather fun, yet once that's been curtailed the clunky way it switches over to the party is a little off- beat to feel shoehorned into the film like this, especially with it being the film's main point here. While some of the humor is hit-or- miss, especially with the sudden appearance and running joke of the series' main zombie villain appearing, on the whole these are the main issues holding it down.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, pervasive drug use, and Nudity.
Phil Hubbs The final film? well who knows but this isn't as bad as I've read and its certainly no worse than the fourth film ('Necropolis'). Basically the same plot lay out with the deadly toxic gas again being mistreated and lost, although this time its turned into a drug which was an interesting twist. Its still pretty dumb though really. The students find these barrels of toxic gunk and decide to test them?! They discover that the chemical have the same type of effect as ecstasy when taken orally...sort of. It actually makes you foam at the mouth and spasm! none the less they name the drug Z for the zombie-like effect it has on a person. Then guess what? they start extracting the chemical, putting it in pill form and selling around school...well that's not totally illegal and dangerous now is it.Apparently you're only suppose to take one pill at a time but guess what...I won't even finish that. So before you can say holy squelching zombie balls...there are zombies everywhere. The story does follow on from the last film and has the same surviving cast members which is good but for some reason they don't seem to know what the gas is or what it can do as if the last film never happened. Yet this film does follow on from the last for sure as the characters all have the same names. I suppose they may not have seen the canisters in the last film but its still a bit odd, never the less the film plays out much the same as before with people going down one by one as we head towards the rave finale. The makeup is spot on just like the previous films and looks nice n slimy, nothing too new looking but it all works and does the job plus the Tarman zombie (or another version) is back and looking sweet.I think this film also gets back to the humour aspect of the original two films which is good and in my opinion makes it worthwhile and a fitting addition to the series. Even thought the entire premise is absurdly ridiculous...but I guess that also harks back to the classic 80's originals.5/10
toyboxmonster I rented this movie (never having seen the other "Living Dead" movies) hoping for a chilling, creepy, over-the-top horror movie, but once again, my habit of judging a movie by its cover has earned me another two hours of dissatisfaction. This is a sad modern comedy (being synonymous with sex, drugs and alcohol) with the feel of a cheap B-Movie falsely advertised as a horror movie... Horrible lighting and simple camera angles give the distinct feeling that the creators of this movie hadn't the slightest idea what they were doing, and had never laid their hands on a video camera either. The acting was, for the most part, pathetic (including emotionless reactions to the death of family and very cheesy, corny lines delivered by the all-too-fake DJ). The plot is as ridiculous as the way in which it was filmed and the entire movie is designed only to attract teenage audiences hoping for breasts and cheap thrills. If you have any love for your own intelligence, leave this movie on the Video Zone shelf where it belongs.
dftwilight I felt obligated to rent "Return of the Living Dead: Rave from the Grave" since I've seen the rest of the series. Needless to say the ROTLD series isn't the best in cinematic story appeal but at least the first 3 managed to suspend my disbelief (barely). The newest ROTLD's are absolutely horrid. One-dimensional characters who do unbelievably stupid things one scene after the other. I kept screaming at the television "WHY??? WHY DID YOU DO THAT???" This stupid film consisted of the same cast from "ROTLD: Necropolis" so you know the acting wasn't going to be any better. The really funny thing was that it's obvious this hunk of poo was filmed in an Easter bloc country so all of the extras who play "American" high schoolers and whatnot have an accent. Yes, I know the filming locations of both parts 4 and 5 are no big secret, but COME ON! The only high moments were the topless Eastern bloc chicks. Very nice. Lamest part? A girl turns into a zombie while in the car with her boyfriend. She turns to him, says "Braaaains" yet instead of attacking him, she starts to perform fellatio. Of course the inevitable happens and she bites bites down. The whole time I'm thinking, "Now wait a minute. If she wants brains, why is she going down on him?? THIS IS STUPID!!!!!" Admittedly, "This is stupid" ran through my head the whole time I watched this snore fest. It's flicks like these that makes me miss Mystery Science Theater 3000.
