hrkepler 'Silent Rage' is one peculiar film. It is not the only science-fiction martial arts horror film, but easely could be one of the finest examples of this sort of genre mash-up (at least among Hollywood productions). And it is quite different from usual Chuck Norris' vehicle.Chuck Norris stars as sheriff Dan Stevens who must stop psychotic killer John Kirby (Brian Libby) who's been turned indestructible by genetic experiments. As the film tries to play more like psychological horror there aren't much scenes where Chuck Norris can show of his martial arts skill. Though there is one scene where he single handedly empties the bar from unpleasant bikers. The biggest problem with 'Silent Rage' is the lack of charisma of its lead actor. Chuck Norris is pretty likable guy, but he seemed too wooden and lacking of charisma against the quiet psychopath Brian Libby. Not the mention those three scientist creating Kirby are played by charismatic character actors.Well, if you want to see something different from Chuck Norris, then you should check this one out. No, actually this one is must see for Chuck Norris fans.
Thy Davideth Silent Rage is about some psychotic retard who kills his relatives and then is killed himself to only be resurrected through scientific experiment and then goes on a killing spree. I liked this one. The acting was actually okay and the idea is cheesy fun but of course seeing Chuck beating ass is always the highlight of every one of his films. My favorite scene, however, is when the killer chop this guys head after getting hit with a chair. That scene was shot in such a bad way, it was funny. Recommended if you a Chuck Norris fan.
TOMASBBloodhound Silent Rage just might be worth your time. Though far from perfect, this film is a cut above the other Norris films made up to that point. Not only do we get to see him kick some tail, we also get some good comic relief from Stephen Furst. And at the heart of it all is a plot involving a genetically engineered psychopathic killer. In addition to some good fight scenes, there is slasher- style suspense and some atypical characters in the periphery. Norris plays a small town Texas sheriff who in the process of responding to a domestic violence call, finds himself face to face with a homicidal maniac. The man known as John Kirby is a mental patient who completely snaps and kills a couple people he lives with. I don't recall his relationship with this family he attacks. They may be his relatives, or just someone he rents a room from. I would have liked to know more about that home situation. Anyway, Kirby won't let the deputies take him in without them having to unload their weapons into him, leaving him comatose. At the hospital a group of doctors attempts to revive Kirby using some kind of genetic formula. Not sure exactly what their miracle drug was made of, but definitely not something approved by the FDA. The doctors give him so much of it, not only does Kirby survive, he becomes an unstoppable killing machine, preying on the doctors, their families, Norris... anyone he can get his hands on. Can Norris stop him? And still have time to save the town from motorcycle gangs? And have have time to swing in a hammock with his girlfriend while a cheesy love song is playing???Maybe I was in too good of a mood the other day when I saw this. The story is impossible to believe, Norris is as wooden as ever, some of the suspense is clumsily handled... but something about this killer and the way these doctors try to engineer him... I found it an interesting idea. The supporting cast is surprisingly strong. Furst is likable, as well as Ron Silver as the doctor with a conscience. The lead doctor is outstanding as well. He's played by Steven Keats who you may remember as Bronson's meek son in law in Death Wish. A guy named Brian Libby plays Kirby. Weird looking guy. Perfect for this role. As the audience we want to know more about his back story. Give Silent Rage a chance. Try it again if its been a couple decades since you've seen it. Its held up okay. Not quite on the level of the Missing In Actions or Delta Forces that would come later for Norris, but still pretty good. 7 of 10 stars. The Hound.
Leofwine_draca Chuck Norris meets THE TERMINATOR on HALLOWEEN – that's the best summation I can think of to get across this film's tone, plot, and mood. The easiest thing for me to do is to split the focus of the film equally into those three sections. First of all, you get a blond Chuck Norris at the very pinnacle of his career; he's in his prime here, physically, and his good ol' boy sheriff is a wooden joy to behold. Of course, Chuck Norris wouldn't be around if he didn't have any ass to kick, and he's in his element when he brawls with a gang of bikers in a bar. Additionally, I don't think the film will be spoiled if I tell you it all boils down to a barnstorming battle between our moustachioed hero and the evil serial killer, and it's a real corker. Expect hard knuckle punches and roundhouse kicks all, well, round when Chuck gets into it.As for the TERMINATOR influence – well, it's possibly more of a Lovecraft influence, as a trio of dopey docs get some of that serum from RE-ANIMATOR and use it to bring a bag guy back from the brink. Basically, the chap is pumped full of chemicals which make his body immune to damage, which we see thanks to some cool special effects of knife wounds on his chest healing themselves straight away. The result is an unstoppable killer that just keeps coming back for more, even when he gets set on fire in an exploding car, or pumped full of lead from Chuck's revolver. Finally, HALLOWEEN is a massive inspiration for the stalk-and-slash sequences that populate this movie, and if you're going to copy, you might as well copy from the best! Cue lots of spooky atmosphere as young heroines find themselves stalked through dark houses by a lurking psychopath (all enhanced by a cool syntho score) and some excellent tracking shots that put us behind the eyes of the killer! The opening shot, displaying a man driven to madness by a mundane world, finally taking an axe to a family of innocents, has some great low-budget camera-work that really makes it special.SILENT RAGE has its moments of cheese, which is the norm for a Chuck Norris outing. Stephen Furst, as the deputy, is a total buffoon, and his attempts at humour are very poor indeed. On the plus side, the reliable Ron Silver lends a hand as a doctor struggling with his conscience, whilst it's great to see the Phantom of the Paradise himself, William Finley, make another film appearance – this time as a nerdy doc who you'll end up loving. Brian Libby's outrageous gurning killer is a good 'un, so kudos to the guy for making his freak so memorable; however, it's all left to Chuck Norris to tie up the loose ends, and he does so with relish. Special mention has to go to Toni Kalem's screaming heroine, a good example of her type – and she certainly isn't shy when it comes to losing her clothing
